On February 19, Dr. Michel Boufadel spoke
on the Effects and Recovery
of Potential Oil Spills in the Delaware River at Temple University.
Oil spills could cause major devastation to the environment due to
their potential large volumes. Dr Boufadel considered various
scenarios of oil spills and the best response strategies, with an
emphasis on bioremediation. Historic spills such as the Exxon
Valdez and Athos oil spills were also discussed.

Congratulations to two faculty members for receiving grants
Dr. Michel Boufadel, the department Chair, received a grant for $5 million from PennDOT as part of an Intergovernmental Agreement between PennDOT and Temple University. Also Dr. Rominder Suri, a new Associate Professor in the department, has received a $1.6 million grant
to establish the Pennsylvania Environmental Technology Center, which is designed to sustain and advance Pennsylvania industry.
Please join us in welcoming two new faculty to our Department in Fall 2008
Dr. Rominder Suri will join us as a tenured Associate Professor and Dr. Naji Khoury will join us as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. Short biographical sketches of the faculty are reported below.
Dr. Naji Khoury received his PhD in Civil Engineering from the Oklahoma University in 2005. He was Research Associate and Instructor at the School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science at the University of Oklahoma. His research areas include pavement design, usage of cementitiously stabilized aggregate in pavement applications, and geotechnical engineering.
Dr. Rominder Suri received his PhD in Environmental Engineering from Michigan Technical University in 1995. He was a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Center for the Environment at Villanova University. His research areas include: Emerging Contaminants, sustainable technologies, and reactor engineering and process design.
Women's Engineering Explorations
The Women’s Engineering Explorations (WE2), a one week residency program for high school girls, was another great success this summer achieved by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Adrienne Cooper, an Environmental Engineering faculty directed the WE2, and she was assisted by Ms. Michelle Smith the Department’s Administrative Coordinator. The goal of the program, which is to introduce the girls to the basic concepts of engineering and the option of choosing engineering as a possible career goal, was successfully achieved.
This year 57 applications were submitted, of which 27 girls were chosen to participate. There were six girls from Philadelphia and several from the surrounding area. There were some girls that traveled from as far as Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and even the Virgin Islands to participate in the program. The girls formed a very exciting, fun, and pleasant group. They all expressed that it was a great experience for them. The girls stayed in the dorms, so they had a chance to experience college life, and they had a tour of the campus. They also had the opportunity to visit the company L-3 Communications and the Philadelphia Water Department to witness the daily operations of the engineering industry.
The most rewarding part of this program was that they had the opportunity to reinforce their math and science skills by participating in hands-on projects, 6 lab experiments, and a final competition for a mouse trap project where they had to design and construct a mouse trap to launch a ping pong ball into a hoop. They were judged on distance, accuracy and innovation. These activities gave them the opportunity to experience for themselves the excitement and reward of a career in engineering and increase their leadership and teamwork skills.
