Program Director Statement

Bioengineering is the paradigm of the applications of engineering in medicine, biology, the environment, and biotechnology. Bioengineers are associated with cutting-edge areas such as implant design, tissue engineering, bioimaging, injury biomechanics, targeted drug delivery, and biomimetics. Along with diverse areas of specialization comes a wide range of career paths. A bioengineer may work in areas such as medical devices, targeted drug delivery and drug discovery, nanotechnology, advanced biomaterials, speech processing, artificial intelligence, or biotechnology. Many bioengineers elect to pursue careers in medicine or law. In fact, according to the American Association of Medical Colleges, applicants with a bioengineering background have a 58% rate of admission into medical school, which is the highest among all undergraduate majors! Students interested in pursuing this interdisciplinary path between engineering and biology should also consult the Whitaker Foundation (www.bmenet.org) for a review of the technological advances now contemplated.
