The College of Engineering offers two specialized programs in Bioengineering:

  • Bioelectionics
  • Biomechanics/Biomaterials

Bioelectronics is the merging of electrical engineering and biological sciences which creates a new approach leading to such technologies as lab-on-a-chip (BioMEMS) for the detection of environmental and physiological states, wet-wire circuits, which hold the promise of a direct circuit connection between biological and electronic systems, and diagnostic imaging. Students in this discipline must be conversant not only in biology, but also have an understanding of the modern principles and capabilities of microelectronics, signal analysis, and fabrication.

Biomechanics/Biomaterials is the application of biological, chemical, and materials systems to create new applications in the health sciences. The merging of these disciplines creates a new approach to such technologies as implants, tissue engineering, injury biomechanics, polymers for targeted drug delivery, and biomimetic materials. Students in this discipline must be conversant not only in biology, but also have an understanding of the modern principles and capabilities of materials and mechanics.
