The field of education today offers a world of opportunities for individuals seeking meaningful work and the potential to influence the lives of children and their families. At Temple, we believe that all children deserve the highest quality teachers and education professionals, and it is those professional educators we seek to prepare.
We focus on preparing educators to work in challenging urban and suburban classrooms: teaching them how to create inclusive classrooms that meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population of students. School districts value the skills and competencies, as well as the classroom experience, our graduates bring to schools across the region, and our graduates find employment around the tri-state area as well as in the School District of Philadelphia.
At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, most courses in the College are small and interactive. Undergraduate courses generally enroll fewer than 35 students and graduate courses are rarely larger than 25 students. Students are expected to take an active role in their learning, including interactive discussion boards, Web-based activities, supplemental readings and class discussion.
In addition, nearly every program features a clinical component, for which our students are placed in schools or other educational settings to learn from observation and experience. Professors, school-based supervisors and experienced clinical faculty supervise students in the field and help to make the connection between theory, classroom learning and practice.
At the graduate level, we encourage all students to learn research methods to enable them to become reflective practitioners of their chosen profession. Professionals with strong research credentials know how to keep track of and study what they do in order to use the data they gather to inform and improve their practice. Students at the doctoral level conduct original research with a goal toward improving practice not just for themselves but for other educators.
In the education profession, as in so many others, learning does not stop once an educator has received certification and begun practice. As new knowledge is generated, and new methods tried, educators need access to best practices and to the latest research influencing professional practice in their fields. After working for a few years, teachers or other education professionals often decide they need additional, more specialized skills in areas such as literacy, special education, English language learning or leadership.
In addition to programs that prepare students for general classroom teaching, the College offers various specialized degrees and certification programs designed to prepare school counselors, school psychologists, reading/literacy specialists, teachers of English as a second language, special education teachers, curriculum supervisors and school and school district administrators. We offer programs for students seeking initial certification and professional development programs for working professionals seeking to add an advanced certification to their credentials or acquire a master's or doctoral degree. These programs, often cohort-based, are offered at times and in formats designed to maximize learning and take best advantage of out-of-school time.
The College of Education at Temple is well connected to school districts, school personnel, policy makers and parent and education advocacy organizations across the region and around the state. Our historically strong relationship with the School District of Philadelphia enables us to work collaboratively with school district personnel and city schools to improve education as we prepare the next generation of professionals. Relationships with suburban districts, including Norristown and Cheltenham, provide opportunities for our students in other regional school settings.
Our leadership program in Harrisburg brings our students close to the venues where decisions about state standards and certification requirements are made. Our cooperating school network presents opportunities for our students to develop deep knowledge of schools as institutions as well as knowledge of individual classrooms. Our commitment to service learning places many of our students in schools and community agencies to learn first hand about the workings of community institutions and to contribute to those communities at the same time.
Our relationships with school districts enable us to assist our graduates seeking jobs in the region and beyond. Because we focus on ensuring that all of our graduates meet the highly qualified standard set by the state, they are well prepared to perform at a high level, even in challenging classroom and school settings, and have a high rate of success on the job market.
