The Sponsored Projects Process at Temple University

Recent College of Education Worksessions

UPDATE: On November 30, 2006, the College held a session to review protocols pertaining to Sponsored Projects and Financial Compliance. The handouts distributed during the session can be downloaded from the links below.

The November 2006 session followed the October 21, 2005 session during which representatives from the Office of the Vice President for Research (pre-award activities), Grant Accounting (post-award activities), and General Accounting (grant cost management on-line) made presentations and were available for questions regarding the College of Education's policy on sponsored research. All College and Center faculty and staff involved with sponsored research were invited to attend.

The handouts, presentation files, and video are available here for those who missed the two sessions or would like to review the materials. Note that all policies and procedures described here (and revised as of July 2007) are now in effect for any new or ongoing proposal.

About the SPAF Process

Important Timelines:

Principal Investigators are strongly encouraged to be in touch with research support (ed.research@temple.edu) , as soon as they are considering submitting a proposal. At minimum, two weeks notice is required for budget development/review and the Dean's review and approval. In the event that a proposal is being submitted to a foundation or corporation, the Assistant Dean will inform the Director of Development. Given the various steps involved in the SPAF process, the sooner the PI is in touch with the Assistant Dean for Research and Roseanne Wallin, Director of Grants & Contract Administration in the Sponsored Research Administration office located within the Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, the better we can assist you.

SPAF Submission to OVPR:

Principal Investigators will be responsible for obtaining the signatures of the department chair and all co-Principal Investigators listed on the SPAF. The PI will also be responsible for submitting the Sponsored Projects Approval Form (SPAF) to OVPR once the Dean has approved the document. This is to ensure that if questions arise about the SPAF, the PI is available to answer them at the time that the SPAF is submitted. We anticipate that this will eliminate delays once the SPAF reaches the SPA office in the OVPR.

Questions:

If you have questions about the SPAF process, please contact D. Crystal Byndloss, Assistant Dean for Research. Please also continue to consult the College of Education e-Newsletter, "Ed's Up!", for updates related to research opportunities, SPAF protocol, proposal writing, and the like.
