The doctoral program in Educational Administration prepares professionals for leadership positions in the direction and management of K-12 and higher education. This includes preparation for the roles of school principal, business administrator, and superintendent. Graduates typically assume administrative positions in schools, school districts, colleges and universities, and in state and federal education agencies. They may also pursue positions as professors of educational administration and engage in the development of new knowledge within the discipline through research.
This degree, considered advanced preparation for an administrative career, offers three strands: General Administration, Higher Education Administration, and School Business Management. An individual program of study is planned in consultation with an advisor. The doctoral option in General Administration fulfills the academic requirements for the Pennsylvania superintendent's letter of eligibility.
The program requires 72 credits of course work (24 courses) plus successful completion and defense of a doctoral dissertation (a minimum of 6 credits for the dissertation must also be completed). Students entering with a relevant master’s degree are required to complete only 42 credits. The candidate is required to complete residency during the first academic year (9 credits each semester in two consecutive semesters, either fall/spring or spring/fall) following admission. Following the final semester of course work, the candidate must take the doctoral preliminary examination. After successful completion of the 72 credits of course work and the preliminary examination, the candidate must present a proposal for a doctoral dissertation. Upon approval of the proposal and elevation to candidacy, the candidate must register for dissertation credit each academic-year / semester until the dissertation is accepted.
(At least one of these courses is to be taken during each semester of residency).
Admission is a two-phase process. Initially, the application and supporting documentation are reviewed.
