What is the Pennsylvania Governor's School for Urban Teaching?

One of 12 Governor's Schools across the state, each focusing on a different topic, the new Pennsylvania Governor's School for Urban Teaching is a 5-week-long, university-based, summer residential program, hosted by the College of Education at Temple University. This Governor's School is designed to attract, encourage, motivate, and prepare talented high school students—particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds and communities—to higher education and careers in urban teaching.

Who should apply?

Talented, mature, and motivated high school students who are interested in teaching as a career. Applicants must be Pennsylvania residents and current high school juniors in good academic standing.

  • Approximately 30 students will be selected for the first class, summer of 2008, using a rigorous application and review process.
  • Applications will be accepted from students across the state.

Where is it held?

From June 29 to August 2, 2008, students will reside and participate in academic coursework, enrichment, and related activities on Temple University's main campus, a mile north of center city Philadelphia. Additional activities, including hands-on teaching experience, will take place across the city, in local schools, museums, cultural centers, and recreation areas.

What is the cost?

Expenses for housing, meals, and materials are covered. Students will receive a $150 weekly stipend.

What will students learn?

The program develops participants' knowledge, skills, and confidence in urban teaching and school improvement, and encourages positive attitudes towards urban teaching as a career. Students will also be exposed to the college experience and provided specific supports to improve their college readiness.

How are students nominated for the Governor's School?
