College of Education Commencement Awards

The following awards are given annually to candidates graduating in August, January or May of the year in which the award is made. In most cases, faculty nominate students for these awards. If students wish to be nominated, they should contact a faculty member in the appropriate department and request consideration.


*Student Teacher of the Year - Awarded to the most outstanding student teacher, undergraduate or graduate, in the graduating class in recognition of exemplary performance in scholarship and teaching. Nominated by a student teaching supervisor and selected by a faculty committee.

Nominations for the following four awards are made by College of Education faculty members and submitted to the chairperson of the Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology in Education Department.

 

*1) Teacher Education Graduate in Elementary Education/Early Childhood - Awarded to the most outstanding member of the graduating class majoring in Elementary/Early Childhood Education who demonstrated excellence in scholarship and teaching.

*2) Teacher Education Graduate in Secondary Education - Awarded to the teacher education graduate concentrating in secondary education whose record of scholarship and teaching is outstanding.

*3) Teacher Education Graduate in Special Education - Awarded to the most outstanding member of the graduating class majoring in special education, who demonstrated excellence in scholarship and teaching.

*4) Teacher Education Graduate in Career and Technical Education - Awarded to the most outstanding member of the graduating class majoring in career and technical education, who demonstrated excellence in scholarship and teaching.


Benjamin Banneker Award
The purpose of the FUND is to provide an annual award for a full-time graduate student in the College of Education who worked as a research or teaching assistant in the College during the academic year prior to receiving the award, and who showed outstanding work and initiative in carrying out his or her research/teaching activities. 

Additional Requirements:

  • (STUDENT OR FACULTY MEMBER) Submit a letter of recommendation from the faculty member who sponsored your research during this academic year. 
  • Address the LETTER to the BANNEKER AWARD FUND SELECTION COMMITTEE

*S.W. Caplan Memorial Career and Technical Education Alumni Association Award - Awarded to a member of the graduating class majoring in marketing/distributive education with outstanding qualities of leadership and personality who has earned the highest scholastic average for all work taken at Temple University. The candidate is nominated by the Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology in Education faculty in the Career and Technical Education program.

 


 

John G. Finch Award in Technology
Awarded to the most outstanding member of the graduating class who shows promise in the integration of technology into the teaching-learning process. Student must submit a portfolio of his or her work demonstrating the use of technology.  ($500 Cash Award)

Additional Requirements:

  • Write a 500 word essay on the importance of using technology in the classroom
  • Address the SUBMISSION to the FINCH AWARD FUND SELECTION COMMITTEE

 

Loretta M. Kaltz Endowed Award Fund – Awarded to a graduating student majoring in Spanish Education, who has displayed academic excellence, with preference given to students intending to teach in the School District of Philadelphia.

 


 

Susan R. Leventhal Memorial Award – Awarded to a student who demonstrates their joy of communicating and working with elementary level students as evidenced in student-teaching and in other related activities.

 


 

Dr. Dick Malnati Award – Awarded to a student for outstanding contributions to the Counseling Psychology Program. This special award goes to those selected few who have gone above and beyond faculty expectations with regard to professionalism, volunteerism and advancing group cooperation among classmates. These students stand out and are exemplary of the values espoused by the former department chairperson, Dr. Dick Malnati (Deceased)

 


 

*Workforce Education Alumni Service Award - Awarded to a member of the graduating class, who has been judged to have performed the most outstanding service in the interest of the College of Education and the University. A minimum GPA of 3.5 is required. The candidate is nominated by the Curriculum, Instruction and Technology in Education faculty in the Career and Technical Education program.

 


 

Dr. Elton Robertson Award in Technology – Awarded to the most outstanding member of the graduating class who shows promise in the use of technology as a teacher. Student must submit a portfolio of his or her work demonstrating the use of technology. Student must submit a portfolio of his or her work demonstrating the use of technology.  ($500 Cash Award)

Additional Requirements:

  • Write a 500 word essay on the importance of using technology in the classroom
  • Address the SUBMISSION to the ROBERTSON AWARD FUND SELECTION COMMITTEE

 

Benjamin Verdile Alumni Service Award - Awarded to a graduate or undergraduate member of the graduating class judged to have performed the most outstanding service in the interest of the College of Education and/or the University.

 


 

Dr. Rita Wolotkiewicz Award Fund - Awarded to a doctoral degree candidate in recognition of outstanding professional achievement.

 


 

Additionally, the following awards will be given:

Dean Willard Zahn Tribute Award - Awarded to a graduating senior who has completed a minimum of 60 semester hours (exclusive of Pass/Fail and Credit/No Credit grades) enrolled in the College of Education with the highest scholastic average at the time of placement in student teaching. The Office of Student Services determines the award recipient.

Student Ambassadors Award – Awarded to those students who play a significant role in events sponsored by the College of Education. The winners have provided exemplary service and representation of the College of Education, at college-wide meetings, visitation events, and seminars.

 

Awards will be presented in May at a College Awards ceremony. The Awards Ceremony is scheduled to take place on
