The Temple University Center for Research in Human Development and Education (CRHDE) in the College of Education was established in 1986. CRHDE is a broad-based, interdisciplinary research and development and technical assistance center devoted to studying complex issues in human development and education. The Center is particularly interested in studying and serving children, youth, and families who are challenged by the circumstances of economic and educational disadvantage.
The overall mission of the Center is to conduct programmatic basic and applied research and provide technical assistance aimed at enhancing the functioning of students, parents, and educational institutions. The work of the Center spans the educational continuum from pre-k and beyond and includes in-school and out-of-school programming focusing on the provision and consumption of learning activities.
The Center addresses both direct and indirect consequences of learning and achievement, evaluates existing policies, and suggests new ones. CRHDE was designed with the basic assumption that the educational and developmental challenges facing children and parents are rooted in the complex array of economic, cultural, social, and political forces that help shape families’ living circumstances. Addressing these problems requires complex, multilayered research, development, and technical assistance grounded in the best science. The programs of work pursued by the Center also reflect an understanding of the new and changing forces that influence how students, families, schools, and communities function. The Center is interdisciplinary by design, drawing on the expertise of social scientists in education, psychology, sociology, and economics.
Dr. C. Kent McGuire, Dean of the College of Education, is the Center's director.
