CITE prepares K-12 teachers for traditional and non-traditional settings. Here, skilled educators are prepared, research is conducted, model educational programs are developed, and teaching professionals are exposed to the newest theories, materials and methods in education.
“Valuing Diversity” is the core that unites the four themes of the initial teacher preparation programs: authenticity, inclusion, reflection, and technology. Each program prepares educators who are trained in the learning and development of diverse students. Finally, the learning environment is a component of the Department’s valuing of diversity, as our students leave us able to recognize and create supportive learning environments for all students. To that end, the Department established six Standards of Skillful Teaching, which are addressed in all professional core courses. Students demonstrate competence in each standard through development of and teaching lessons that demonstrate: Active Learning, Coherence and Continuity, Critical and Creative Thinking, Real World Connections, Reflective Thinking, and Understanding Content.
A five year combined BA/MA certification program offers the opportunity for Temple undergraduates to obtain an undergraduate degree while simultaneously pursuing a Masters in Education degree and Pennsylvania State Teacher Certification.
These programs develop curriculum specialists, initiate and disseminate scholarly research, and provide service to educational institutions in the regional, the national and the international communities.
