Tricia S. Jones is a Professor of Adult and Organizational Development in the Dept. of Psychological Studies in Education at Temple University (Philadelphia, PA). She teaches courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels in conflict processes, conflict resolution education, negotiation and mediation, interpersonal communication, organizational communication (with emphasis on organizational dispute system design), and qualitative and quantitative research methodology.
Her consulting experience in organizational conflict and dispute system design extends over the past twenty years. During that time, she has consulted with government, corporate and non-profit organizations such as the Organization of American States, the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict, Georgia State University system, the American Occupational Therapy Association, American Baptist Churches – USA, Merrill-Lynch, U.S. West, AT&T, and General Electric.
Her conflict coaching work has focused on training programs for government agencies, higher education, health care and state offices of dispute resolution. In 2009-2011, she designed and implemented the Department of Veterans Affairs’ conflict coaching program as a component of the VA ADR systems nationwide under the auspices of the Office of Resolution Management.
Her conflict scholarship has been funded with more than $3,000,000.00 in external funding from federal and state agencies and private foundations. She has authored 6 books and over 50 articles and book chapters on conflict management and has given more than 200 presentations at national and international conferences. Her books on conflict and conflict resolution education include: Conflict Coaching: Conflict Management Strategies and Skills for the Individual (Sage, 2008), New Directions on Mediation (Sage, 1994), Does It Work? The Case for Conflict Resolution Education in our Nations Schools (CRENet, 2000), Kids Working It Out: Stories and Strategies for Making Peace in Our Schools (Jossey-Bass, 2003), Interpersonal Communication through the Life Span (Allyn & Bacon, 2008) and Intercultural Communication: A Peacebuilding Approach (Wadsworth, forthcoming 2012). She is currently working on The Heart of Conflict (in process) and Conflict Coaching for Different Contexts (in process).
From 2001-2007 she served as the Editor-in-Chief of Conflict Resolution Quarterly, the scholarly journal of the Association for Conflict Resolution, the nation’s largest professional association for conflict management and dispute resolution.
Dr. Jones is the Project Director of the Conflict Resolution Education in Teacher Education (CRETE) project funded for a total of $2,200,000 million dollars by the U.S. Department of Education’s FIPSE program (Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education), the George Gund Foundation, the JAMS Foundation, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The CRETE mission is to educate pre-service teachers and mentor teachers/supervisers about conflict resolution education to help them create more constructive learning environments, develop students’ social and emotional competencies, and enable new teachers to succeed and sustain themselves in their profession. CRETE is partnering with over 20 Higher Education Institutions in 10 states and the District of Columbia.
Dr. Jones is a member of the Peace Education Reference Group for the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) that is implementing conflict resolution education and peace education in thirteen global regions. Dr. Jones and colleagues co-chaired the Peace Education and Conflict Resolution Education work group of the GPPAC/United Nations summit on “The Role of Civil Societies in the Prevention of Armed Conflict” in July 2005, a conference at the UN Headquarters in New York attended by over 1,000 government and NGO representatives from more than 60 countries. In March 2007 and March 2008, Dr. Jones was a member of the facilitation team for International Summits on Conflict Resolution Education that were hosted by national and international partners including the Organization of American States and the United Nations Development Program.
In June 2004 Professor Jones was awarded the Jeffrey Z. Rubin Theory to Practice Award from the International Association for Conflict Management. The Rubin award recognizes excellence in scholarship, research, and practice in conflict processes. IACM is an international and interdisciplinary organization of conflict scholars representing scholars from over 20 disciplines from over 35 nations.
In September 2010 she received the Kreidler Award for Recognition in Conflict Resolution Education from the Association for Conflict Resolution, the largest national association of conflict professionals in the United States.
