The College of Education & Partnership Schools support Mayor Nutter’s ongoing “Love Where You Live” anti-litter campaign. The plan is to recruit thousands of Philadelphians to help clean major sections of our city; to raise awareness about litter prevention; and to instill neighborhood pride and civic responsibility in residents in an effort to keep our city clean each and every day. If you’d like more information, visit www.phillycleanup.com. In honor of Philadelphia's 13th Annual Martin Luther King Day of Service, the College of Education's Making A Difference Project (MAD) gathered a group of 50 volunteers to serve food to the homeless at Chosen 300 Ministries in Center City Philadelphia. The evening started with a short service and program about the late Dr. King and by the end of the night, over 200 citizens were fed. This was the first time the College of Education participated in the MLK Day of Service and we hope you'll join us year round for these events! Image of Bill Cosby

This past Fall 2007 semester, the offices of development and alumni affairs hosted a series of discussions called The Fireside Chats, featuring Temple alumnus, Dr. William 'Bill' Cosby, Jr. The events are geared toward empowering our student teachers by focusing on topics such as student safety and engagment & relationship building. Other speakers, such as principals, counselors, and educators, have led the discussion with Dr. Cosby to create a rich environment where our student teachers can openly discuss the issues facing them. Next FIRESIDE CHAT with Dr. Cosby: Thursday, April 10th. If you'd like more information, please contact Valerie Gay, Director of Development and Alumni Affairs.

W2 = Watson Works

On November 17th, 2007, the College of Education held its first W2=Watson Works event! Watson Works, a part of the Making A Difference Project, was the first in our series of volunteer events. This particular kick-off was in honor of the Bernard C. Watson, Temple's first African-American to be honored with an endowed chair at the College of Education. Students and friends came to enjoy an inspirational talk by Dr. Watson himself. They later participated in duties that benefited the North Philadelphia community. If you are interested in participating in any more of our volunteer events, please contact Tiffany Tavarez, Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs, at tiffany@temple.edu.

Access to Excellence: The 125th Anniversary Campaign for Temple University

image of the gala

Access to Excellence launched publicly on October 5, 2007. Begun on July 1, 2002 in a silent phase, the campaign aims to raise $350 million for five key priorities: maintaining affordability and expanding access for students; attracting and retaining the most talented scholars; creating outstanding campus environments for teaching and learning; expanding the research enterprise; and continuing Temple’s powerful role in the community and throughout the region. Temple is moving forward on each of these fronts. The campaign is designed to secure funding for initiatives, but also to build a stronger culture of philanthropy across the university community that will sustain Temple in the future.
