Temple University’s Center for Teaching Excellence and the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards announce 53 local school district teachers have met the nation’s highest teaching standards and achieved National Board Certification.®

Philadelphia, Pa. — The National Board of Professional Teaching Standards announced that 8,900 teachers nationwide achieved National Board Certification in 2009. This announcement brings the total number of teachers with National Board Certification to nearly 82,000. National Board Certification is the highest certification in the teaching profession. The process requires teachers to analyze and reflect on their teaching practice through a rigorous year-long process. Teachers must demonstrate evidence of both the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards and their personal impact on student learning.

Among those newly certified are 53 teachers participating in the support program provided by Temple University’s Center for Teaching Excellence in the College of Education. The center serves teachers in school districts from Philadelphia to Harrisburg. This group of newly certified teachers joins an additional 87 teachers from across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania who also have achieved certification this year, bringing the total number of National Board Certified Teachers serving in Pennsylvania to 641.

The following Temple University assisted teachers demonstrated evidence of high-quality instructional skills and have joined the ranks of National Board Certified Teachers:

The increase in numbers can be attributed to support provided by Gov. Edward Rendell, Secretary of Education Dr. Gerald Zahorchak and the Pennsylvania State legislature. In 2006, four regional Centers for Teaching Excellence were established through grants from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at Duquesne University, East Stroudsburg University, Gannon University and Temple University. The centers’ primary mission is to advance high-quality teaching and learning by promoting awareness, recruitment and support of teachers through the certification process. In addition, the $2,500 National Board tuition is paid for through state and federal grants.

The National Research Council affirmed that National Board Certification has had a positive impact on student achievement, teacher retention and professional development. In the most rigorous and comprehensive study to date about National Board Certification, the National Research Council found that students taught by National Board Certified teachers make greater gains on achievement tests than students taught by teachers who have not achieved certification.

“At a time when so many schools and districts are struggling to meet increasingly high standards for all students, the National Board’s process is proving an effective approach to helping teachers develop the knowledge and skills to continuously reflect on and improve their practice and its effects on student learning” says Dr. C. Kent McGuire, dean of the College of Education at Temple University. “It’s taking teacher development to the next level, from merely being experienced to being truly accomplished master teachers who use a variety of data to modify their practice and better meet the needs of their students.

We’re very proud to have supported more NBPTS candidates than any other institution in the state. We look forward to expanding our efforts to help board certified teachers develop as high-quality peer coaches and mentors who can help make improvements not just in their individual classrooms, but in other classes, schools and districts across the Commonwealth.”
