Welcome to the Center for Teaching Excellence at Temple University Website
There are many publications to assist candidates throughout the process. The Center would like to acquire multiple copies of books to lend out to candidates during the assessment year.
On Saturday mornings, we will be providing the candidates with access to a computer lab where they can work on their entries without disruption from family, friends, and colleagues. The fee would pay for use of the room, printing costs, and a stipend for a National Board Certified Teacher who will be present to answer candidate's questions as they prepare their portfolio. A maximum of 20 candidates will be able to participate in each session.
Video majors at Temple University are providing their expertise to assist the teachers in taping their video entries. The fee would pay for the student's travel time as they tape the teacher and assist them in editing the entry as per National Board Standards and making the necessary copies.
Stipends will be provided to a National Board Certified Teacher to be a one-on-one mentor to the candidate throughout the Assessment Process. Mentors will provide feedback on all portfolio entries, organizational strategies, and moral and technical support. Currently, we have over 100 candidates needing mentors.
Workshops are being provided to assist the candidate with the knowledge and technical skills needed to complete the four portfolios required by the National Boards. The fees would cover the cost of a room, food, materials, and stipends for the National Board Certified Teachers facilitating the workshops. Workshops generally include 30 candidates. Each candidate is invited to a minimum of 5 workshops during the assessment year.
State and Federal Grants are paying the $2,500 tuition cost to the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards for first year candidates. Due to the rigor of this process, some candidates take more than one year to become certified. They may resubmit entries for two additional years. Each entry they resubmit costs the candidate $600.
The candidates need to make two videos of their classrooms and teaching experiences. The camcorder and microphone will be available for teachers who cannot access them through their schools.
Each year the Center will hold awareness orientation programs at Temple University Main and Harrisburg Campuses. The orientation is designed to give potential candidates information about the benefits of National Board Certification and the requirements of the process. Orientation sessions will include approximately 100 potential candidates per session. Sponsorship will include the cost of the room, materials, food, and stipends for the National Board Teachers facilitating the sessions.
Temple is offering a three-credit Graduate Course, The Reflective Teacher, to all first time candidates. The course will assist the teacher to be more reflective about his/her teaching practices while guiding them through the National Board Process. Fees would cover tuition cost for a student who may otherwise not be able to attend.
