National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Certification rewards teachers with:

National Board Certification is a voluntary assessment that measures a teacher's practice against high and rigorous national standards. It is a symbol of commitment to excellence in teaching. When a teacher achieves National Board Certification, it is a credential attesting to the fact that the teacher has been assessed by his or her peers as one who is accomplished, makes sound professional judgments about student learning, and acts effectively with programs designed to meet the needs of all his/her students.

The assessment involves the successful completion of four portfolio entries demonstrating teaching practice and accomplishments, and six content-based assessment exercises. All are reviewed according to the NBPTS standards defined for 25 different subject areas and age ranges defined by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The $2,500 program tuition for qualified candidates will be paid for through grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Federal Government.

  • To pursue National Board Certification, you must have:
  • A baccalaureate degree
  • Three years of certified teaching experience in early childhood, elementary, middle, or secondary education
  • A valid state teaching license
