National Board Certification rewards teachers with:

National Board Certification is a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize and reward teachers who meet high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. Candidates who achieve National Board Certification are called National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs).

  • To pursue National Board Certification, you must have:
  • A baccalaureate degree
  • Three years of teaching experience in early childhood, elementary, middle or secondary schools
  • A valid state teaching license for each of those three years

To become NBCTs, candidates will complete four portfolio entries and six content-based exercises, which are reviewed according to the NBCT standards defined for 24 different subject areas and age ranges. National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) tuition for qualified candidates is being paid for through grants from the State of Pennsylvania and the Federal Government.
