8. Sustainability at Temple University
Sandra McDade Director Office of Sustainability
Video Transcript
"Hi, I’m Sandy McDade, I’m the director of Sustainability at Temple University. Sustainability office started in July of 2008 and we are here to push the green initiatives at Temple University. Our office deals with a physical plan including dealing with transportation recycling green building, waste minimization; we also work with the academic side which integrates sustainability to the curriculum. To introduce extracurricular activities such as speakers on relevant topics, last year we had Van Jones who was a leader in sustainability area. We also work with students on outreach projects on their projects in class. We reach out to the community such as working with tree tenders, or with community gardens. Generally we’re a resource for the university for anything green. We’re in the lower level in Mitten Hall, we’re there from 8:30 to 5:00. You can reach us at sustainability@temple.edu".

9.Conserving Energy Hannah Webster, Student
Office of Sustainability
Video Transcript
"So being a part of Temple’s campus means also living sustainably and ways I try to be a sustainable student is I like to conserve energy and some of those ways are I turn off the lights when I don’t use them. I use CLF light bulbs, I also have a power cord that I plug all my appliances into and that’s an easy way to conserve energy when I don’t use them. I also use reusable bags. I would say a benefit in being a distance learner is that you can see how directly saving energy saves you money as well which is great news for a student".

"So when you think of sustainability, usually the first thing that pops into people’s mind is recycling, but there really is a next step beyond recycling and one of those things is called waste minimization. Where we focus not on recycling objects as much but not even to use things to begin with. So a few steps that you might want to take as a distance learner is thinking about using a reusable mug for coffee, using a reusable water bottle while you’re at the gym instead of grabbing that single use water bottle, take a reusable bottle and you can bring it each time. It not only saves you cash but it helps the environment. Another thing that you can do that will also stream line your studies is taking notes on the PDF copy of the readings that are posted on blackboard. You don’t need to print those out Adobe now allows you to have notes in the margin just as if you were writing on a piece of paper. Other options that could save you cash are using electronic books or purchasing a used book or renting a book rather than purchasing new. They’re cheaper than new books, and you still get the same content. For more information on how you can reduce waste and other pointers on how you can green your lifestyle you can go to our website at www.temple.edu/sustainability".

11. Zimride: Sustainable Transportation
Kathleen Grady Sustainability Coordinator Office of Sustainability
Video Transcript
"So you’re a distance leaner, you already have one of the greenest commutes, you’re probably studying from your kitchen table or maybe from your home office. But there’s still ways that you can green your travel. Try Zimride, it’s our new online software for carpooling. It’s exclusive to Temple students, staff and faculty, you have to be part of the temple community and have to have a temple.edu email address to use it. That’s how we can make sure that it’s safe for people to use. You can go online right from home and it’s integrated with facebook, you simply create a profile and enter a ride, you can either find a ride, post a ride or you can search for rides. So next time you’re thinking about taking a weekend trip to Washington D.C. why not go on and post the ride and see if you can find anybody to share it with you. This helps you save money on gas and tolls but also helps you save on your carbon footprint basically you’re cutting those commissions half by sharing it with someone else. So to learn more about Zimride you can go to zimride.temple.edu or if you go to our website at www.temple.edu/sustainability for more information".
