Course Substitutions
Course substitutions for foreign language requirements are requested occasionally when ALL THREE of the following conditions apply to the situation:
- The disability directly restricts the student’s ability to fulfill this requirement toward graduation.
- A substitution would not violate the integrity or essential function of the academic program.
- No other effective accommodation can be found.
A student experiencing extreme difficulty in foreign languages should meet with DRS staff to discuss alternatives and procedures. We will need current documentation that meets our documentation guidelines, a copy of transcripts from high school and previous colleges, and your current DARS report to review your request for consideration. Approval through the Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies is required for substitutions.
With the advent of the General Education curriculum, the University offers Quantitative Literacy classes (http://www.temple.edu/provost/gened/QuantitativeLiteracy.html) that are multidisciplinary in nature and accessible to students who have a history of deficits in mathematics. If you are a student who has specific concerns about fulfilling math-related requirements, you should contact DRS to discuss appropriate accommodations.
