freshman year, spring semester Course Description: A lecture series examining the structural biology of the periodontium in health and disease, with consideration of clinical, histologic, biochemical, microbiologic and immunologic features. An examination of gingivitis and periodontitis as specific microbial infections in susceptible human hosts also is provided.

Course Description: A lecture series covering fundamental aspects of periodontal diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment planning, systemic disorders and periodontal therapy, the impact of aging on the periodontium, microbiology and immunology of periodontal diseases, genetic aspects of periodontal diseases, periodontal/orthodontic interrelationships, non-surgical periodontal instrumentation, plaque control and maintenance of periodontal health, periodontal emergencies, and adjunctive use of locally-applied and systemically-delivered antimicrobial agents in periodontal therapy.

Course Description: A lecture series covering basic aspects of non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy, periodontal wound healing, fundamental aspects of various types of plastic, resective and regenerative forms of periodontal surgery, molar furcation management, an introduction to dental implantology and peri-implant disease, periodontal maintenance care, and potential systemic health risks of periodontal diseases.

Course Description: A lecture series providing evidence-based principles and case-based examples on clinical and radiographic periodontal examination procedures, periodontal instrument sharpening, occlusal therapy in periodontics, non-plaque-related periodontal pathology, tobacco use and periodontal diseases, periodontal plastic surgery, host response modulation in periodontal therapy, dental implant treatment planning, and surgical oral implantology.

Course Description: A lecture series with laboratory instruction providing evidence-based data and case-based examples on sharpening periodontal scalers and curettes, periodontal patient self-care, efficacy of non-surgical vs. surgical periodontal therapy, periodontal prescription writing, diabetes and other endocrine disorders and the periodontium, halitosis, periodontal surgical flap management, pocket reduction surgery, clinical crown lengthening, and growth factors in periodontal and peri-implant regeneration.
