Pre-doctoral Courses
Mission Statement
1. The mission of the Department of
Orthodontics is to educate and provide practical experiences
for students in their quest to become socially sensitive, biologically
oriented and technically competent dentists. To achieve these
within the framework of mission of the school, the educational
programs will:
2. Emphasize the biological basis of
growth and development in the craniofacial complex and deviations
from normal course of events, and their clinical significance.
3. Expose the student to elements of
tooth movement, both in basic sciences and in practical applications.
4. Design a curriculum where orthodontic
tooth movement is incorporated into the general practice of
dentistry.
5. Employ principles of orthodontics
as a basis to educate students in clinical problem-solving.
6. Encourage dental students to think
scientifically and enable them to discriminate a malformation
from variations of normal.
7. Expose the students to elements of
interaction with the specialists.

Description:This course introduces the student to concepts and
principles of orofacial growth and development and malocclusion.
During this course the student will be exposed to diagnostic
and treatment planning procedures. In the preclinical laboratories,
orthodontic appliances will be fabricated.

Description:This didactic course introduces the student to concepts
of orthodontic treatment in the young and in the adult. The
distinction between "orthodontic tooth movement" and "orthodontic
treatment" is made. Adjunctive orthodontics and the role of
tooth movement in general dental practice is emphasized. Interactions
between specialties and sequencing of treatment is accentuated.
This course allows the student to make the transition from preclinical
to clinical activities on orthodontics.

Description:This didactic course exposes the student to practice
of orthodontics. Also included in the course is presentations
of orthodontic armamentarium for orthodontic tooth movement
in a general dental practice setting. Primarily this course
is designed to enable the student to interact between the orthodontic
specialist and the patient.

Description:This preclinical course introduces the student to
clinical techniques of management of disturbances in the growth
and development of craniofacial complex. During this course,
common developmental deformities will be discussed and the possible
appliance systems to correct these conditions will be fabricated.
Postdoctoral Program
Mission Statement
The mission of postdoctoral program
in orthodontics is to educate and train graduate students to
the highest standards of the profession, and to advance the
specialty of orthodontics. To accomplish this task, the program
is focused to:
1. Recruit the highest caliber applicants
in the nation.
2. Develop an educational program where
the students are exposed to all the newest concepts and techniques.
3. Design a curriculum for intensive,
goal-oriented clinical training.
4. Equip the students with skills in
practice management.
5. Conduct high caliber student research
suitable for publication.
6. Prepare the student for ABO certification.
7. Develop research programs focused
to affect the future practice of orthodontics.
