On October 29, 2004, the Graduate Endodontic Clinic was dedicated as the Samuel Seltzer Postdoctoral Endodontic Clinic at Temple University School of Dentistry.

Sam received his DDS in 1937 from the University of Pennsylvania . In 1939, after 2 years of military service, he joined the faculty of the School of Dental Medicine ,

University of Pennsylvania , and was an Instructor in Endodontics there, under Louis Grossman.  He remained on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania till 1967, rising in rank from Instructor, to Assistant Professor, to Associate Professor.  In 1967, Dr. Seltzer was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Endodontics, Temple University School of Dentistry, a position that he held until 1983.

He maintained his affiliation with Temple from that time, as Professor Emeritus, and continued to teach in the Postdoctoral program until 2001, when his health no longer permitted it.

His lifelong interest in dental research and pulp biology can be traced to his first paper, published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, in 1940.  In 1949, he published a paper with Dr. I.B. Bender entitled "The efficacy of various drugs against Monilia albicans isolated from the root canal of an infected pulpless tooth"  which marked the beginning of a truly remarkable scientific collaboration between these two men, which spanned more than 30 years, and resulted in the publication of more than 40 papers.  After coming to Temple in 1967, Dr. Seltzer continued both his teaching and research activities.

During the period of his tenure as Endodontology Department Chairman at Temple, his was the second most published department in Endodontic Research, among all academic institutions in the country, only being surpassed in publication productiveness by the University of Pennsylvania (Martinoff et al, JADA, 101: 919-922, 1980).  Over the course of his career, he published more than 100 papers, 6 books and monographs, and received numerous research grants from both the US Public Health Service and private sources.  His service to the profession included terms as Director and President of the American Board of Endodontics.  Dr. Seltzer's numerous honors and awards included The Pulp Biology Award from the International Association for Dental Research, The Louis I. Grossman Research Award from the AAE, The Lindback Award for Excellence in Teaching (Temple University), the Masada Award from the State of Israel, and Honorary memberships in the Brazilian Academy of Dentistry and the Venezuelan Society of Endodontics.

Dr. Seltzer took special joy from his interaction with students, and seemed to have a very special relationship with them.  For all these many contributions to the profession, to the science of Pulp Biology, and to the school where he spent more than 30 years of his professional life, Temple University has honored Dr. Seltzer by dedicating its Postdoctoral Endodontics Clinic in his name.
