Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national honor society
of dentistry, was founded in 1914 to recognize and promote outstanding
scholarship and exemplary character development within dental
education. Temple University's chapter - Kappa Kappa - was chartered
in 1937. Election in the spring semester of the senior year is
considered by many to be the highest honor that can be bestowed
upon a graduate of the DMD program.

OKU/Kappa Kappa Chapter Scholarly Writing Competition 2006
The officers of Temple University's chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the National Dental Honorary Society, announced the winners of the OKU Writing Competition. The purpose of the competition is to stimulate students in the DMD Program to think critically about broad issues facing the dental profession and to contribute to the public discussion of those issues beyond the traditional confines of the classroom. The topic chosen for this Fifth Annual competition was: The Ethical Dilemmas of Cosmetic Dentistry: Has Dentistry ceased to be ‘Professional’?. A panel of five judges, including members of the faculty and an outside consultant, evaluated each persuasive paper for originality, insight, reasoning, and substantiation, among other criteria, and recommended two authors for certificates of merit and cash prizes. The 2006 winners are: FIRST PLACE, Christian J. Nolten (left picture, Class of 2007), and SECOND PLACE, Avin Gupta (right picture, class of 2008).
