Temple University believes that education should be available to anyone on the basis of their intellectual and personal motivation, regardless of their income. In this spirit, we are eager to assist all Temple students to afford an education. The estimate average debt at the end of the DMD program is approximately $222,956 (based upon the 2010-2011 academic year costs). To take advantage of all eligible financial aid resources, it is very important that students maintain a good credit rating.
Students seeking financial assistance must complete a FAFSA form on line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. Dental students can apply for financial aid assistance for tuition, instrument costs, fees, books and living expenses. We have prepared this information to make you aware of the financial aid opportunities available to you.
Types of Financial Aid
University-based Aid:
- Federal Perkins Loan
- Health Professions Student Loan Program
- Loans and Grants for Disadvantaged Students
- Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students
The above financial aid funding sources are offered to financially disadvantaged students. Interested students must provide parental information (income and assets) on the FAFSA application.
The William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (FDLP): Eligible students may borrow funds directly from the U.S. Department of Education to help finance their dental school expenses. Both subsidized and unsubsidized direct loans are available. Students can borrow a maximum each year of approximately $42,700 through this program. Students can apply at www.studentloans.gov.
Other Educational Loans: Additional funding is available to supplement the Direct Student Loan. Please contact the Office of Student Financial Services at 215-707-2667 for more information about alternative loan opportunities. Many students borrow the Federal Direct Graduate Plus loan to help with living expenses and other costs beyond tuition.
Service Scholarships: The National Health Service Corps and the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarships are service-based programs. They cover the cost of dental education and provide a living allowance in exchange for a specific number of years of service after graduation. For information about the National Health Service Corps, please visit www.nhsc.hrsa.gov. For Armed Services information, please contact your local recruiting center.
Other Scholarships/Loans: The Kornberg School of Dentistry offers scholarship opportunities to assist you in financing your dental education. Listed below are several scholarships for which you may qualify:

Delaware Institute for Dental Education & Research (DIDER)(back to top)
DIDER and the Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry have a partnership through which financial support is provided to Delaware residents who attend the dental school. Students who are admitted to the DIDER program are eligible to receive stipends for their tuition at Temple University. Each student from Delaware will receive a minimum of $1,000 per year and may be eligible for additional funds based on their level of financial need.
This partnership provides Delaware residents the opportunity to receive quality education and training at a highly regarded regional dental school. The partnership also promotes opportunities for participating dental students to complete externship and residency training programs at facilities in Delaware.Housing(back to top)
The Kornberg School of Dentistry is located adjacent to subway and bus routes, and just one mile from US Route 1 with access to the entire Delaware Valley, students live in virtually every area of the city and suburbs. Housing costs are very reasonable when compared to other major northeastern cities. The Office of Admissions, Diversity and Student Services maintains a comprehensive listing of off-campus housing, including rental prices and other information. This listing is given to all entering students upon request. The Office also provides a service that identifies incoming students who need roommates.
