Types of Financial Aid
University-based Aid: There are several need-based funding sources available to dental students. These include the following:
- Federal Perkins Loan
- Health Professions Student Loan Program
- Loans and Grants for Disadvantaged Students
- Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students
If you are seeking any financial aid, you must complete a FAFSA application and for the loans above, provide parental income on the form. If you are only borrowing loans, it is not necessary to complete the parental portion of the form. To obtain a FAFSA form, please contact the Dental School Admissions and Student Affairs Office at 215/707-7663 or 1 800/441-4363. To apply on line, please use the website: FAFSA.ed.gov
As a dental student, you are able to borrow tuition, instrument costs, fees, books and living expenses.
Federal Loans: The Federal Stafford Loan program consists of government backed loans provided by lending institutions and are the most widely used financial aid resource for dental school students. You can borrow a maximum each year of $38,500 through this program.
Other Educational Loans: Many students borrow additional funding through alternative loan programs to help with living expenses and other costs beyond tuition. Alternative loans are credit based and are more costly than other programs. Please contact the HSC Office of Student Financial Services at 215/707-2667 for applications and information.
Service Scholarships: The National Health Service Corps and the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarships are service-based programs. They cover the cost of dental education and provide a living allowance in exchange for a specific number of years of service after graduation. These scholarship programs are competitive and limited in number so you should apply early. For information about the National Health Service Corps, please call 800/638-0824. For Armed Services information, please contact your local recruiting center.
Other Scholarships/Loans: Temple University offers numerous scholarship opportunities to assist you in financing your dental education. Listed below are several scholarships for which you may qualify:

We suggest that you use the Internet and/or a Library to research other possible scholarship opportunities. Two of the best scholarship websites available are FastWeb and Scholarship Resource Network. Delaware Institute for Dental Education & Research (DIDER)
DIDER and Temple University School of Dentistry have a partnership through which financial support is provided to Delaware residents who attend the dental school. Students who are admitted to the DIDER program are eligible to receive stipends for their tuition at Temple University. Each student from Delaware will receive a minimum of $5,000 per year and may be eligible for additional funds based on their level of financial need.
This partnership provides Delaware residents the opportunity to receive quality education and training at a highly regarded regional dental school. The partnership also promotes opportunities for participating dental students to complete externship and residency training programs at facilities in Delaware.
