To balance the rigors of a challenging educational program, students can benefit tremendously by having comfortable and secure housing near the School; by making use of recreational, exercise, or cultural facilities; and by involvement in fraternal or social organizations. All of these options are readily available at The Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry.

Housing

Because the School of Dentistry is located adjacent to subway and bus routes, and just one mile from US Route 1 with access to the entire Delaware Valley, students live in virtually every area of the city and suburbs. Housing costs are very reasonable when compared to other major northeastern cities. The Office of Admissions and Student Affairs maintains a comprehensive listing of off-campus housing, including rental prices and other information. This listing is given to all entering students upon request. The Office also provides a service that identifies incoming students who need roommates.

The Student-Faculty Center

The Student-Faculty Center is a comprehensive conference, fitness, and leisure center used extensively by students and faculty of all schools on the Health Sciences Campus. Conference rooms, study rooms, a large cafeteria, racquetball courts, locker rooms with saunas, fitness room, and a multi-purpose court used for basketball, volleyball, and tennis are among the many facilities offered. The Student-Faculty Center sponsors a variety of programs, hosts multiple conferences, as well as some intramural sports.

Athletics

Dental students are not eligible to participate in the intercollegiate athletics for which Temple University is nationally known. This does not prevent students from participating in sports. The School of Dentistry fields teams in soccer, hockey, volleyball, basketball, and softball that compete with other professional schools in the city. Many students take advantage of the athletic facilities in the Student-Faculty Center. Intramural sports such as softball, touch football, and basketball are organized on the Temple University Main Campus, located less than two miles south of the School of Dentistry, directly accessible by subway or bus. An Olympic-size swimming pool is also available on the Main Campus.

Student Government

The Student Council of the School of Dentistry represents the student body in issues of concern to students and the School. The Council is composed of four officers and two elected representatives from each class. The Council supports and promotes activities that aim to enhance the academic, professional, and social welfare of the student body. The Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs serves as the advisor to the student council.

The School has chapters of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), Student National Dental Association (SNDA), the Hispanic Dental Association (HDA), American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD), and the Asian American Student Dental Association (AASDA). While primarily concerned with professional issues, these groups also conduct social activities.

Most of the dental disciplines offer a study club (i.e., Stomatognathic Society, Research Study Club, Periodontology Honor Society). All clubs have a faculty advisor who assists student officers in arranging for speakers and presentations. Evening lectures and lunch seminars are presented, generally on a monthly basis, through these organizations. Lectures are usually open and notification is posted on student bulletin boards.

Student Conduct

All faculty and students maintain a high standard of professionalism and ethics as defined by the Ethical Foundation for Professional Education and Behavior for the Predoctoral Student . All students are obligated to abide by the Honor Code available upon enrollment, and published in the Student Handbook.
