The School of Dentistry and the Fox School of Business
and Management at Kornberg School of Dentistry offers a program leading to
the dual degrees of Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Master
of Business Administration (MBA). This dual degree program is
designed to allow the academically excellent student to earn two
advanced degrees in five years, although many students complete the program in four years. If you complete the DMD/MBA program
at Temple University, you will be a highly qualified graduate
with a broad range of marketable skills and increased career options
in dentistry, business and public service.
Benefits of the Program
1. More skills, broader vision, and
the ability to operate in a more challenging and competitive
environment.
2. Increased capabilities for career
advancement and more career options
3. A competitive edge in business and
expanded earning power for those practicing dentistry
4. The management and business skills
for administrative positions in insurance companies, hospitals,
HMOs, and other organizations
5. The skills to better manage personal
finances
6. An advanced education track for academically
outstanding students at the School of Dentistry
7. Six years of graduate education integrated
into a four / five year (full time) program
Curriculum
The first two semesters of study in
the DMD/MBA program will be spent in the School of Dentistry,
where you will complete all required DMD courses. You may begin
to take courses in the Fox School of Business and Management after
completion of the first year of dental school if you so choose.
In the third year of the program, you
will complete all lecture courses and a portion of the clinical
requirements in the School of Dentistry, plus a minimum of nine
credit hours in the School of Business and Management. Summer
sessions may be used to help meet these requirements.
In the fourth and fifth years of the
joint degree program, you will complete those courses from each
school, which fulfill the graduation requirements for each degree.
You will choose the sequence of these courses working with the
respective faculty advisers in the Schools of Dentistry and
Business and Management.
The graduation requirements for both
degrees should be attainable in four - five years by a full-time
student. This goal is facilitated by the granting of transfer
credit for certain designated courses between the School of
Dentistry and the School of Business and Management. Courses
accepted for transfer credit will replace elective and selective
courses required for the MBA and DMD degrees. In addition, up
to 24 semester hours credit of 400-level courses at the School
of Business and Management may be waived or tested for exemption
if you have taken previous courses at an accredited business
school.
Upon successful completion of the degree
requirements of each school, you will receive both the DMD and
MBA degrees.
Admissions Requirements
To apply to the DMD/MBA program you must
meet the admissions requirements of both schools.
You must first apply to the School of Dentistry and be accepted into the DMD program. During your freshman year of dental school you need to apply separately to the Fox School of Business and Management and meet their criteria for acceptance. Once accepted to the Fox School of Business and Management, you must indicate in a letter to the Director of the DMD/MBA program, Dr. Lugo, your
desire to enter the dual degree DMD/MBA program. If accepted, you are then able to take courses at the Fox the
School of Business and Management along with the dental school curriculum.
Tuition
The tuition for the DMD/MBA program will
be charged by the School of Dentistry. When accepted and enrolled in the dual degree program, you are enrolled
in both the School of Dentistry and the School of Business and
Management you will pay only the dental school tuition. If you require
longer to complete the MBA than the DMD program, the remaining
MBA courses will be charged to you at business school tuition rates. Please note that most students are highly motivated and complete both degrees in four years.
Financial Assistance
Students pursuing the dual DMD/MBA degree
program are eligible for financial assistance from the School
of Dentistry according to the school's financial aid guidelines.
Faculty Advisers
When you enroll in the joint degree program
you will have a faculty adviser to assist you with administrative
and curriculum choices and problems related to participation
in the program
