Advanced Standing Program for Foreign Trained Dentists

World Map

This Advanced Standing Program is a three-year educational program, leading to a D.M.D. degree, designed for graduates of foreign dental schools who want to practice dentistry in the United States. Most states require a degree from a dental school accredited by the American Dental Association before granting licensure. Successful completion of the program allows foreign-trained dentists to take licensing exams in any state

Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry participates in the Centralized Application for Advanced Placement for International Dentists (CAAPID). Applications sent directly to the dental school will not be accepted. The CAAPID website may be accessed at www.adea.org.

Selection Factors

Preference will be given to applicants with a minimum Science Grade Point Average of 3.3 and 120 credit hours; including courses in Biochemistry, Histology, Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Neuroanatomy, and Pathology.  Applicants with exceptional academic credentials and a demonstrated commitment to the profession will be considered for a personal interview. Dental related work experience or exposure to the dental profession in the United States is an important consideration for an interview.

An important factor in the selection process is the applicant's demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients in the clinical setting and to learn successfully within the academic environment. Successful candidates will demonstrate both strong written and verbal skills. TOEFL scores above 100 are required.

Special Features of Advanced D.M.D. Program

The program starts with a 16-week preparatory program from May through August in which students review the skills and dental information taught in the first two years of the dental curriculum.  This program enables Advanced D.M.D students to make a smooth transition into the fall semester.
