The Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry has a
tradition of excellence in clinical dentistry. The School of Dentistry,
established in 1863 as the Philadelphia Dental College, became
part of Temple University in 1907. Temple is the second-oldest
dental school in continuous existence in the United States and,
for 140 years, has provided men and women with a strong academic
and clinical background for the practice of general dentistry.
The common thread running throughout the clinical program over
the years has been excellence in clinical dentistry. This excellence
is largely a measure of the talents and efforts of the faculty
and staff who provide the instruction. Those graduates who have
gone on to academic, private or military careers have done so
with the confidence that they won't take a back seat to anyone
in the area of clinical skills. Our annual polls of recent graduates
indicate that the great majority, if they had to do it over again,
would still "choose Temple".
Our North Philadelphia location provides
our students with an abundant pool of patients who need competent and affordable dental care. More important, the
students, under the direction of highly skilled practitioners,
satisfy the dental needs of the community. I am especially proud
of the genuine rapport that develops between students and patients.
Our patients are seen as more than requirements, and the interpersonal
skills refined in Temple's clinics serve our graduates well in
practice. Our responsiveness to the needs of our community led
to the creation of our renowned Rosenthal Clinic Center, formerly
the Infectious Disease Center, which provides treatment to medically
compromised patients in the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding
communities. Our Outreach Programs provide treatment
to the very young, the very old and to children
in underserved rural and urban areas.
Temple has a reputation for being a student
oriented dental school. We are
a family and each student becomes an integral part of that family.
When you commit to Temple, Temple commits to you. There are no outsiders at Temple.
Although we
cannot guarantee that each entering student will complete the program, we make every effort to help that student
graduate in a timely fashion. Our Offices of Student Affairs and
Academic Affairs are responsive to your needs, receptive to your
ideas and prepared to provide you with the extra help to succeed in four years. Our faculty and administration
provide leadership by example. They are accessible and approachable,
and they are here for you.
Temple was founded with the mission
to provide an affordable education to all qualified persons, regardless
of race, religion, social or economic status or ethnic origin.
That history of diversity continues today, and the School of Dentistry
is a microcosm not only of the University, but of the world in
which we live. This diversity provides an education that cannot
be taught, but is learned through personally experiencing and
benefiting from the diverse and varied experiences of your classmates.
Your lifelong friendships will transcend national borders
and span continents.
The Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry
is comprised of bright, talented students who "could have gone
anywhere" but "chose Temple." Temple is a wise choice, and I hope
you, too, will choose Temple. We are Temple Proud!
