North East Regional Board of Dental Examinations at Temple University

WELCOME! The The Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry hosts the North East Regional Board examination in dentistry three times each year, in May, August and December. During the winter series (December) the examination in dental hygiene is also administered.

It is our intention, through this site to provide you with the necessary information to aid in your preparation to take the examination at our facility. Although every attempt will be made to keep this site as current and accurate as possible, occasionally minor changes may occur which may not be immediately reflected within.

Dr. Leona Sperrazza is the site coordinator at the Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry for the Northeast Regional Board examination and is your primary contact.

Please feel free to contact the School or refer to the Candidate Information Sheet which will be supplied to you from NERB once they have assigned you to Temple as your test site.

  • There is a $350 facility fee for non-Temple candidates taking the North East Regional Board exam in Dentistry. The facility fee for the candidates taking the Dental Hygiene exam is $125. This fee must be paid in cash, certified check or money order and should be made payable to Temple University. NO PERSONAL CHECK ACCEPTED. This fee applies for partial or complete clinical examination and is non-refundable if any portion of the NERB exam has been attempted at the School of Dentistry . Please arrange to pay this fee prior to the day of the exam. If that is not possible, it can be paid at the time of the examination. Envelopes may be addressed to Dr. Leona Sperrazza, Office of Clinical Affairs, The Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry, 3223 N. Broad Street , Philadelphia , PA 19140.
  • Operatory units with water, air, gas and electricity are provided. The units available are only compatible with 4- holed handpieces. Candidates must furnish their own handpieces and all instruments . The School of Dentistry does NOT have handpieces, cavitrons, curing lights or instruments available to rent.
  • It is the responsibility of the candidates to provide their own patients. The School of Dentistry is NOT responsible for providing patients. Additionally, there are no provisions for the screening of patients prior to the examination dates. During the exam, if you have extra patients that you find you will not need and are willing to share these patients with other candidates, you may give the information to the examiner assistants on the floor. If your patient was denied and you need a back-up patient during the exam, again, please inform the examiner assistants.

    Amalgam triturators are available in each operatory.
  • The Radiology Department will be available for taking and developing radiographs during the examination only.
  • Sterilization of instruments is done on the second floor in the Central Sterilization area. Candidates must ensure that all instruments are properly packaged and labeled prior to turning them in.
  • It is the responsibility of the candidate to have each patient sign a Consent to Treatment and Release of Liability to Temple University form for each procedure performed on that patient. These forms will be provided chairside and collected by a representative of the School of Dentistry.
  • Operatory assignments will be posted near the first floor reception windows.

  • Candidates are encouraged to visit the school prior to the examination dates to familiarize themselves with the available facilities. Clinic hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. , Monday through Friday, except during holidays.
  • A Schein Dental Supply store is located within the School of Dentistry . They can be contacted at (215) 707-3617.

  • From the Pennsylvania Turnpike (coming from the west): Exit at Valley Forge interchange and continue east on I-76 to Roosevelt Boulevard extension (Route 1 North). Exit at Broad Street and turn right. The School is one mile south on Broad Street.
  • From the Pennsylvania Turnpike (coming from the east): Exit at Route 1 South, or Route 611 South, or Route 309 South. All three routes cross Broad Street . Continue south on Broad Street to Allegheny Avenue . The School is located on the corner of Broad Street and Allegheny Avenue.
  • From I-95 (coming from the north or south): Follow the signs to Central Philadelphia and exit at Callowhill Street . Follow straight ahead on Callowhill to Broad Street . Turn right on Broad Street . Travel approximately 3 miles, past Main Campus, to the Health Sciences Campus. The School is located on the right hand side at the corner of Broad Street and Allegheny Avenue.
  • From Center City : The northbound C bus from Center City stops at the School of Dentistry at Broad and Allegheny. The northbound local Broad Street Subway from Center City stops at Allegheny Avenue . Intercity trains (Amtrak) stop at 30th Street train station. From there, take the Market-Frankford (Blue Line) to City Hall and transfer to the Broad Street subway.

Public transportation[New Window] is available and conveniently located to the dental clinics.

Parking is available within walking distance from the School of Dentistry at the Temple University Hospital parking lot on Ontario Street . There is a fee for parking in that lot.

Here are some of the frequently asked questions.

1. Can I pay the facility utilization fee on the day of the exam?

Yes, someone will come to your operatory prior to the start of the examination to collect the fee. It will mean less interruption to you if you have your cash, money order or certified check prepared in advance and easily accessible.


2. Is there any place for me or my patient to get something to eat during the exam?

A vendeteria is located on the 4th floor of the Old Dental School. Light fare is available such as bagels, muffins, sandwiches and salads. There are also a number of vending machines stocked with soft drinks and snacks.


3. When and where is the orientation?

Please consult the School of Dentistry for the time you must report to the orientation.  Generally, orientation is held the evening prior to the first day of the examination and it's located in Timmons Hall on the first floor of the Old Dental School.  Signs will be posted from the main entrance to direct you.


4. Where can I get supplies/instruments should I forget something?

There is a Schein Dental Supply store on the 4th floor of the Old Dental School. Their hours of operation are 8:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Questions regarding their stock should be addressed directly by dialing 215-707-3617.
