As Associate Dean of Temple University School of Dentistry, Dr. Ivan Lugo heads the Office of Institutional Relations and Community Affairs. Dr. Lugo also oversees the Division of Continuing Education. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral Medicine and Surgery. During his previous position as Director of the Special Patient Care Clinic, Dr. Lugo expanded dental services to Philadelphia`s uninsured and HIV+/AIDS community through the creation of three additional outreach clinics and mobile dental services to reach homebound individuals. Understanding "oral health as health", he has moved vision into practice by integrating nutritional services within these dental sites.
As past Dental Director for the Philadelphia Public Health Department, Dr. Lugo has successfully maintained seven dental clinics, which serve over 30,000 individuals a year, and has created an innovative delivery model even with the limited financial and human resources available for dental services. He is a trustee and past President of the Hispanic Dental Association. Dr. Lugo is a member of various other national and local organizations that advocate for improving health access in underserved communities. He understands that policy is a tool for creating sustainable change and that a combination of policy and practice is needed to address current problems of health and oral health care disparities.
Dr. Lugo’s academic interests are in the areas of health services research and policy. A strong advocate and effective spokesperson for public health, Dr. Lugo has been integral to the policy efforts of various organizations, representing them at meetings with legislators and testifying before Congress. Dr. Lugo was an invited participant to the National Governors Association Oral Health Policy Academy in 2001, a Secretary of Health and Human Services Primary Care Fellow in 2002, and has recently been awarded a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant to expand community-based dental education. A graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Lugo received his AEGD certificate and his MBA from Temple University.
