Temple provides two graduate certification programs that are based on vocational program standards established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Program content focuses on best practices for school effectiveness, specialized knowledge, and administrative theory. Both the supervisors and the directors certification program combine Saturday Academies with segmented internships under the direction of a university faculty member and local resident resource administrator in a school setting. Additionally, the programs require completion of university-based educational administration coursework. As part of the program, candidates for certification are required to construct an action research portfolio related to an issue of significance to the Career and Technical Education community. After completing all coursework, candidates must pass an oral examination by a Council of Educators Review Board. This assessment addresses leadership, sensitivity, scholarship, problem solving, decision making, and human relations issues.
Students are admitted to these programs in cohort groups during the fall semester. Applications are processed two months prior to the beginning of the semester. Students applying for admission should submit a formal application, letter of recommendation from a vocational director, transcripts of all collegiate coursework, resume, and appropriate MAT scores.
In addition to the formal administrative leadership certificates, the Temple Center collaborates with the eastern region career and technical centers to provide informal leadership experiences through the Teacher Leadership Network. Career and technical centers nominate one or two teacher leaders to represent them at Network meetings where the discuss best practices that have proven beneficial to improving student achievement in their school. Teacher leaders are often involved with their schools professional development committee and can serve as an additional resource for Temple teacher interns.
