Program Mastery

Program Mastery is the second level of the field-based/competency-based career and technical teacher education (FB/CBTE) program at Temple University. Mastery complements VITAL, the first tier of the FB/CBTE program. It is designed to enhance the learning experiences that teachers acquire through VITAL and to prepare them for the Pennsylvania Vocational Instructional II teaching certificate. Mastery provides teachers with the opportunity to acquire advanced levels of pedagogical competence in the areas of curriculum, instruction, evaluation and instructional technology. One goal of the program is to promote student-centered teaching and learning.

Mastery is delivered through a series of interactive experiences that include individualized helping conferences and small group meetings. The intern teachers receive individualized instruction in biweekly classroom visits by a teacher educator from Temple. In addition to these meetings, interns meet online in small groups throughout a semester to share and discuss issues of pedagogical competence with their colleagues. Mastery operates throughout the 17-county eastern region of Pennsylvania. The program relies on a variety of technologies, including telecommuting.
