Cooperative Education Certification

This performance-based certification program is based: (1) on Cooperative Education and Career & Technical Education Program Standards established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, The Bureau of Teacher Certification and Preparation (See the Pennsylvania Department of Education; General Standards and Specific Program Guidelines for State Approval of Professional Education Programs, pages 20-22 for complete details), and (2) the DACUM Research Chart on the Role of the Work-Based Learning Teacher Coordinator.

The Cooperative Education Certification Program combines formal coursework with a supervised internship in both an area career and technical education center and a comprehensive high school. 

Admission to the Program

Students may be admitted to the program in either the Fall or Spring semester.  Applications will be processed upon receipt of appropriate materials.

A. Program admission is based on a person making formal application and

    providing evidence that he/she:

  • is a high school graduate or has a GED diploma;
  • is a citizen of United States;
  • is 18 years of age or older;
  • has demonstrated basic skills competence, occupational competence through the successful completion of the Occupational Competency Assessment, (OCA); or
  • has a Bachelor’s Degree has no less than a total of one year of appropriate occupational experience in the last 10 years; and
  • has a valid PA teaching certificate (add-on candidates only).

 

B. Individuals seeking admission to the program must submit the following:

  • A completed copy of the Application form
  • A copy of their PA vocational/instructional or Instructional teaching   certificate(s),
  • Transcripts of all non - Temple University collegiate level work completed,
  • A copy of their PA OCA Certificate or a completed copy of the Occupational Experience Statement (Form CE-OES)

Course Requirements


A. Candidates who hold a valid PA Vocational Instructional I or II Certificate

     must complete the following course requirements:

1. CTE 4324 Cooperative Education (3 SH)

2. CTE 4331 Coordination Methods for Learning in the Workplace (3SH)

3. CTE 4285 *Internship in Career and Technical Education Practice (3SH)

        

Admission to the Cooperative Education Certification Program for persons in this category encourages matriculation in the Bachelor’s Degree Program at Temple University. 

B. Candidates who have a Bachelor’s Degree in education and a PA

    instructional certificate in vocational education field (e.g., Agriculture Ed.,

    Business Ed, Health Occupations Ed., Family and Consumer Science Ed.,

    Industrial Arts Ed., Technology Ed., or Marketing and Distributive

    Education) must complete the following course requirements:

1. CTE 8324 Cooperative Education (3 SH)

2. CTE 8331 Coordination Methods for Learning in the Workplace (3SH)

3. CTE 9685 *Internship in Career and Technical Education Practice (3SH)

C. Candidates who have a Bachelor’s Degree in education and PA

    instructional certificate outside of vocational education must complete the

    following course requirements:

1. CTE 8501 Curriculum Development in Career and Technical Ed. (3 SH)

2. CTE 8324 Cooperative Education (3 SH)

3. CTE 8507 Foundations/History and Principles of Career and Tech. Ed. (3 SH)

4. CTE 8331 Coordination Methods for Learning in the Workplace (3 SH)

5. CTE 8527 Program Planning & Evaluation in Career Technical Education  (3 SH)

6. CTE 9685 *Internship in Career and Technical Education Practice (3 SH)

 

D.  Candidates who have a Bachelor’s Degree outside of education and do not

     hold an instructional certificate must either complete certification in a

     content area that includes student teaching (see C), or complete the

     following sequence that ends with its own student teaching and the

     internship.

 7.  ED 5212 Curriculum, Teaching & Technology or ED 5115 Context of Ed (3SH)

  8. ED 8523 Introduction to Ed. Psychology (3SH) or Ed. Psych. 5531 or 5541

  9. ED 5203 sect. 301 *Effective Teaching Theory (3SH)

10. ED 5888 sect. 301 *Supervised Student Teaching (3SH)

11. ED 5285 sect. 301 *Seminar in Supervised Teaching (3SH)

 

* These courses are delivered in a field-based or partially field-based format.

Candidates who do not hold a B.S. or B.A. degree and who would like to be certified as teachers of Cooperative Education must be admitted to a Bachelor’s Degree program at Temple University, College of Education, and qualify for admission to the Cooperative Education Certification Program.

NOTE: a. 3.0 GPA must be maintained through all program course work

Pre-Internship Examination

After successfully completing the required coursework, candidates will be required to complete a pre-internship examination. The examination is structured in a problem-based short answer essay format and is based on the DACUM Research Chart on the Role of the Work-Based Learning Teacher Coordinator. Candidates who successfully complete the pre-internship examination will be permitted to participate in the internship.

Internship Requirement (CTE 9685)

Candidates who have completed the course requirements with no less than a 3.0 GPA, and have successfully completed the pre-internship examination, will be permitted to fulfill the internship requirement of the program.  It should be noted that no more than 10 students can be served/admitted to the internship component of the program each semester.  Submit the completed Application for Internship (Form ACEI) at least 30 days prior to the internship.  Internship applications will be processed in the order in which they are received.

The applicant must provide evidence that: (1) arrangements can be made for appropriate internship activity in two school settings, a career and technical education center and a comprehensive high school, and (2) that a local Vocational Cooperative Education Coordinator in each school setting is willing to function in the role of cooperating teacher coordinator.  The internship will continue until all competencies associated with the Cooperative Education Certification Program have been demonstrated and verified. 

 

Oral Assessment

Having successfully completed the internship, the candidate will be required to undergo an oral assessment by a Cooperative Education Council of Educators.  The content of the oral assessment is based on the DACUM Research Chart on the Role of the Work-Based Learning Teacher Coordinator as well as leadership, sensitivity, scholarship, problem solving, decision making and human relations.

This experience provides the candidate an opportunity to present himself/herself to incumbent Career and Technical Education professionals and, provides incumbent professionals an opportunity to gauge the preparation of a prospective cooperative education coordinator.

Program Completion, Praxis Testing and Certification

Candidates who complete all program requirements, and meet other Pennsylvania certification requirements (successful completion of the PPST and PLT tests) and successful completion of the PRAXIS II Specialty Area Test in Cooperative Education (test number 0810), will be recommended for the Cooperative Education Certificate or certificate endorsement.  Contact the Temple Center Certification Advisor, for an application and additional information at (215) 204-8376
