New Teacher Workshops for Career and Technical (CTE) Teacher Interns

The Temple Center conducts New Teacher Workshops each year in January and August. In attendance are beginning Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers representing schools throughout eastern Pennsylvania. The Center’s Will Nause directs this semi-annual activity. Temple Field Resource Associates, CTE teachers, and other teacher education professionals, provide information to the new teachers about teaching standards, classroom management, instructional planning and delivery, and professionalism. The new teachers also have an opportunity to spend a day at Temple University touring the main campus. The IHM Spirituality Center at Immaculata University has been the venue for many years.

The workshop is the opening session of the initial certification course and attendance is required. This transitional experience focuses on crucial information and skills needed by every beginning teacher to be effective in the classroom. Administrators recommend new CTE teachers to the Center.

The next opportunity to attend a workshop is August 5-9, 2013 at Immaculata University

Career and Technical Education (CTE) Reading Project
Wichowski

Dr. Chester P. Wichowski directed the CTE Reading Project recently identified as a Promising Practice by the National Center for Research in Career and Technical Education. A result of the research is a Facilitators’ Guidebook for Reading Strategy Workshops in Reciprocal Teaching, Scaffolding, and Journaling. The content of this document served as the primary component in five years of Pennsylvania Governor’s Institutes on Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening (RWSL) as well as two week-long professional development workshops for Philadelphia CTE teachers. In 2009, a follow-up survey explored the effective use of reading strategies by classroom teachers who participated in the Governor's Institutes. Dr. Wichowsk reported on this reading project at the Association for Career and Technical Education National Conference in St. Louis Missouri November 17-19, 2011.
