Geology BA

Program Goals

B.A. students will acquire a solid foundation in the Earth and Environmental Sciences through classroom instruction, laboratory and field work, and will be provided with opportunities for undergraduate research.  The B.A. degree requires slightly fewer credit hours than the B.S. degree to allow students sufficient flexibility for electives outside the major to pursue a double major or to complete courses required to continue in law, medicine or education.  The degree will prepare them for employment in industry or government, or to pursue a professional degree. Students intending graduate studies in the geosciences are encouraged to complete a B.S.

  • acquire a strong knowledge foundation in geology and related sciences
  • understand how to research the literature and formulate geologic hypotheses
  • be able to apply theoretical, conceptual, and observation knowledge to the analysis of geologic data, test hypotheses, and solve geologic problems
  • demonstrate the ability to discuss issues related to geology that impact society and planet Earth
  • demonstrate competence in scientific inquiry, writing, and oral presentation
  • be employable in earth science-related fields or able to further their education in professional school programs.
