How to read Banner prerequisites and/or co-requisites

General Principles

“ANDs” separate each requirement, and “ORs” show options within each of those requirements. “ORs” make reading the prerequisites complex but they allow students who have bypassed early requirements, or taken variant courses, to not be flagged every time they register for a course that requires that early requirement.

Example

The simple prerequisite of a C in Math 1021 is required for courses such as Math 1022.  Note that one can demonstrate completion of this by any of the following:

  1. Passing Math 1021 at the C level at TU (the distinction of where it was taken is due to the C minimum grade);
  2. Having a test code that shows you have passed Math 1021 in transfer at the C level;
  3. Passing a higher level mathematics course; or
  4. Placing into a higher level mathematics course.

Codes for Math Placement

There are Test Codes entered such as MC1, MC2, etc. These are codes entered by the Measurement and Research Center (MARC) for math placements. All students who took the math placement exam beginning in January 2007 will get a MC# code and if they place into Stat 1001 or Stat 1102 will also get a STA# code.  If a student has not taken the math placement exam within that time period, then:

      • MC1 means that the student is placed into Math 0701.

      • MC2 means that the student is placed into Math 0701 or 0702.

      • MC3 means that the student is placed into Math 1015 or GQ.

      • MC4 means that the student is placed into Math 1021.

      • MC5 means that the student is placed into Math 1022 or Math 1031.

      • MC6 means that the student is placed into Math 1041.

      • STA1 means that the student is placed into Stat 1001.

      • STA2 means that the student is placed into Stat 1102.

Note that students are allowed to take courses at or below their placement level.

Codes for Transferred Courses with C Grades

There are Test Codes entered such as BIO1, CHM1, MA01, etc. These are codes entered by CST for situations where the courses have a C prerequisite.  Students can get one of the following codes if they have taken one of these courses elsewhere and passed it with a C or better.

Please note that there is no automatic way to discover who should get these codes, so if a student is being blocked from registration by the absence of one of these codes and did indeed pass the course elsewhere with a C or better, he or she will need to contact their advisor for assistance. Going forward, CST will be entering them as part of New Student Orientation.

  1. BIO1 means that the student has transferred in BIOL 1011 with a grade of C or higher.
  2. BIO2 means that the student has transferred in BIOL 1012 with a grade of C or higher.
  3. BIO3 means that the student has transferred in BIOL 1111 or 1911 with a grade of C or higher.
  4. BIO4 means that the student has transferred in BIOL 2112 or 2912 with a grade of C or higher.
  5. BIO5 means that the student has transferred in BIOL 2227 with a grade of C or higher.
  6. BIO6 means that the student has transferred in BIOL 2296 with a grade of C or higher.
  7. BIO7 means that the student has transferred in BIOL 3096 with a grade of C or higher.
  8. BIO8 means that the student has transferred in BIOL 3352 with a grade of C or higher.
  9. CHM1 means that the student has transferred in CHEM 1031 or 1041 or 1951 with a grade of C or higher.
  10. CHM2 means that the student has transferred in CHEM 1032 or 1042 or 1952 with a grade of C or higher.
  11. CHM3 means that the student has transferred in CHEM 4203 with a grade of C or higher.
  12. MA01 means that the student has transferred in MATH 0701 to 0702 with a grade of C or higher.
  13. MA02 means that the student has transferred in MATH 1015 with a grade of C or higher.
  14. MA03 means that the student has transferred in MATH 1021 with a grade of C or higher.
  15. MA04 means that the student has transferred in MATH 1022 with a grade of C or higher.
  16. MA05 means that the student has transferred in MATH 1031 with a grade of C or higher.
  17. MA06 means that the student has transferred in MATH 1041 with a grade of C or higher.
  18. MA07 means that the student has transferred in MATH 1042 with a grade of C or higher.
  19. MA08 means that the student has transferred in MATH 2043 with a grade of C or higher.
  20. MA09 means that the student has transferred in MATH 2101 with a grade of C or higher.
  21. MA10 means that the student has transferred in MATH 2103 with a grade of C or higher.
  22. MA11 means that the student has transferred in MATH 2196 with a grade of C or higher.
  23. MA12 means that the student has transferred in MATH 3138 with a grade of C or higher.

Note that students may have other codes relevant to non-CST courses.
