Zebrafish may lack the charms of a house cat, but Danio rerio is ideal for understanding genetic control of development and, ultimately, human disease.
"The fish have the ability to regenerate body parts, such as a fin or heart, with any scarring," says Darius Balciunas, as assistant professor in CST's Department of Biology. "The ability to turn genes on and off at will makes it possible to study the genes required to grow back a fin or mend a heart and look at the effect of gene mutation not only on development but also on regeneration."
