"All computer and information systems purchased or developed by Temple University are prohibited from using or storing Social Security numbers except as permitted under the List of Approved Uses of Social Security Numbers, or, except as approved by (i) the cognizant vice president or Provost and (ii) the Vice President for Computer and Information Services, and consistent with applicable laws."
Each faculty & staff member is asked to review his or her electronic files for files that contain social security numbers and names.
Faculty & Staff can download and install this freeware tool "Spider". This tool will scan and identify files that may contain confidential data. It scans your computer files, searching for patterns of numbers or letters that resemble Social Security numbers. The software is available for Windows | MAC | Unix/Linux users.
If you need to retain your files that contain SSN numbers, you should have the SSN files converted to TUid files. The following web site guides you with the steps involved and performs the conversion.

WARNING: Before doing the the following steps make sure you create a BACKUP of your data !
When your computer is retired, passed to another person or recycled the computer hard disk has to be shredded/wiped. The following web site gives a guide for deleting your data entirely.
