Lasers and Optics as an Enabling Technology
Presentation for Undergraduate Students
Time & Place: 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm | Beury Hall Rm 160
Quantum Weirdness: Technology of the Future?
Time: 6:00 p.m. reception, 7:00 p.m. lecture
Place: Beury Hall, Room 160
Parking: available at the 12th and Diamond Street lot.
We will explore the three features of quantum mechanics that are often characterized as weird: complementarity, superposition and entanglement. Each will be explained in terms of simple examples and animations with minimal use of mathematics. The promise of a quantum technological revolution including much faster computers, completely secure communication, quantum teleportation and an as yet undiscovered quantum weirdness device for every pocket will be discussed. Along the way we will find that quantum mechanics can be entertaining, and perhaps even fun.
