SITU X-Ray study of Hydrothermally prepared Titanates and Silicotitanates used in Nuclear Waste Remediation

Abraham Clearfield, Ph.D.

Professor, Department of Chemistry
Texas A&M University

A Temple alumnus, Dr. Abraham Clearfield is a professor in the Department of Chemistry at Texas A&M University. His currentresearch interests are structure of coordination compounds, layered compounds, phosphonic acids and phosphonates, crystallography, and porous materials. He pioneered studies on synthesis and structure of layered ion exchangers. Dr. Clearfield and his students have synthesized dozens of inorganic ion exchangers, determined their crystal structures and the mechanisms of their exchange behavior. This research led him into studies involving nuclear waste. Dr. Clearfield’s group has synthesized several materials that are extremely selective for specific radionuclides. He won the Southwest ACS Award for excellence in research and is the recipient of an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Oviedo, Spain. Dr. Clearfield is a foreign member of the Indian Materials Research Society and has been nominated as a foreign member of the Ukraine National Academy for his work with scientists in that country dealing with the nuclear waste problems at Chernobyl.
