ArmentiGraduation Speaker - Dr. Angelo Armenti

Angelo Armenti Jr., PhD, CST '65, '70, is the president of California University of Pennsylvania in California, Pa. The university, founded in 1852, has an enrollment of over 8,000 students. Since becoming president in 1992, Dr. Armenti’s accomplishments include a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds, the creation of a new governance structure, and the creation or renovation of numerous campus buildings, including all new residence halls.

Dr. Armenti’s career path was shaped by the excellent high school physics teacher who inspired him to pursue a science career as well as by former Temple president Marvin Wachman, who encouraged him to become an educator. He earned his BS in physics from Villanova University, then attended Temple for both his MA and PhD in physics. Although he worked briefly in industry between his master’s and doctoral degrees, he chose to enter academia because he wanted to "open students’ minds to the beauty and wonder of science in general and physics in particular."

Upon graduation, Dr. Armenti spent two years as an assistant professor of physics at Temple. He then had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova, serving in various capacities including professor of physics, chair of the Physics Department, dean of University College, and director of planning for the University. Dr. Armenti received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching at Villanova in 1978.

Dr. Armenti has been named a fellow of the American Council on Education and is active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. He credits his Temple education, more than any other factor, for the success of his career.
