Physics MA

Program Goals

The student is expected to have a sufficiently broad understanding of the different areas of Physics, which should allow the students to choose areas of specialization appropriate to their future career paths. Pre-dissertationresearch in a subfield of physics is designed to enable the student to identify a topic suitable for a Ph.D. dissertation and their future careers.

After completing this program, students should

  • have a mastery of the foundational areas of Physics, which are: Classical Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Electrodynamics and Quantum Mechanics/Quantum Field Theory.
  • have more than the minimal working knowledge of Mathematical and Computational Methods necessary to understand and apply these techniques their chosen areas of research.
  • know the key concepts in their chosen areas of Physics and apply them, together with the fundamental principles, in their future careers in the analysis and solution of either academic or practical problems.
  • be familiar with and have mastery of modern experimental techniques if they have chosen an experimental career path.
