Graduate Award for Outstanding Research

Please give a detailed recommendation for a graduate student that you wish to nominate to be honored by the College of Science and Technology for Outstanding Research.

Criteria for Oustanding Research

While the methods and materials used for research vary with the field of investigation, distinguished research in any field is characterized by:

  • The significance of the problem that is addressed
  • The novelty of the approach used
  • The rigor of the research

In evaluating a piece of research by any of these criteria, a scientist who works in an area close to the field of investigation may disagree with one whose area of research is far removed from the area. In the case of truly distinguished research, however, it is should be possible to convince any reasonable scientist that all three criteria are satisfied.

Supporting Dossier Content

Individual nominees are free to arrange their dossiers in the way that best makes the case for their research. Dossier should include items such as the following:

  • The nominee's curriculum vitae
  • The nominee's description of the research
  • Any abstracts of presentations or publications stemming from research
  • Supporting statements from at least two faculty members
  • A separate biographical paragraph, written by an advisor or faculty member, which describes the nominee's achievements to be published in the College's Awards Ceremony program
