FACULTY Awards

The College of Science and Technology announces annual teaching awards to be granted in Fall 2009.There will be awards in the following categories:

Distinguished Teaching in a discipline by a tenured or tenure track faculty member.

Up to three awards of $10,000 each will be made in this category.

Distinguished Teaching in a discipline by a non-tenure track faculty member

Up to three awards of $5,000 each will be made in this category.

CST Award for Student Mentor

The award is $5,000.

CST Teacher of the year

The award is $10,000.

Please nominate fellow faculty who have made a positive difference in their undergraduate classes, graduate classes, or mentor duties, which include mentor in the classroom, in classroom laboratories, in research laboratories, as well as career assistance. Self nominations are also accepted.

Thursday, June 25th, 2009 As a courtesy to the nominee we prefer nominations in by Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 so they have time to prepare the documentation.

TIMELINE
Friday, November 2th, 2009 The committee (whose members are faculty who have received either the Great Teacher award, the Lindback award, or a CST Teaching award) will choose awardees
Sunday, November 15th, 2009 The Awards presentation will be at the College of Science and Technology's 10th Anniversary Celebration Concert

POLICIES

Eligibility

The tenured or tenure track faculty member needs to have been at TU for at least 3 years as of the award ceremony.
The non-tenure track faculty member needs to have been at TU for at least 2 years as of the award ceremony.
The faculty member who has already been awarded the Great Teacher Award or the Lindback Award must wait 5 years after receiving the award.

Criteria

Excellence in the different methods of teaching occurs in various contexts. It occurs in large classes, medium classes, small classes, one-on-one teaching, and curriculum development. We expect the candidate to excel in a combination of these contexts.
We will consider the following, among others, as factors:
1. Mastery of the subject area;
2. Development of effective and innovative methods and materials for teaching university students;
3. Continuous efforts to evaluate and improve one's own teaching;
4. Academic and professional achievements of students;
5. Effective relationships with students;

Documentation Period

Since these awards are designed to recognize current achievements, please emphasize examples from the last five years.

Repeat Awards

Faculty will be considered for repeat awards after a 5 year moratorium.

Repeat nominations after unsuccessful nomination

Unsuccessful candidates may be nominated the very next year.

PROCEDURES

Documentation Collection

The Dean's Office will collect the documentation in consultation with the nominator and the nominee.

Documentation Required

From the Candidate—this material must be submitted electronically. An abbreviated Teaching Portfolio which might include:

  1. A statement of one's teaching philosophy.
  2. Material from no more than one course such as a syllabi, examinations, assignments, and samples of student work.
  3. Examples of curriculum development activities in the department or the College if appropriate.
  4. Evidence of individualized work with master's and/or doctoral students if appropriate.

If self-nominated— the nominator, department or Dean's office may submit the material either electronically or by paper:

  1. 3-5 faculty letters of support are required. None need be external, but external letters are acceptable.
  2. Reports of classroom visits from the instructor's peers, if available.
  3. Comments from current and former students if available.
  4. An evaluation statement by a department chair or an appropriate departmental committee.

  1. A curriculum vitae of the candidate which will be taken from SEDONA
  2. CATE forms are already in the Dean's Office
