Graduate Application Process
There are two approaches to applying for graduate school in Chemistry at Temple University:
Approach #1
- PDF Application with Fee Waiver
- Download the PDF application form. You may ignore the instructions to send a check with the application. The department may waive the application fee for strong candidates upon review of copies of GRE/TOEFL scores and transcripts.
- Complete the form and send it and other application materials to:

Approach #2
Other application materials are required for both PDF application and Online application.
All students:
- Original scores for the General GRE sent to us by ETS.
- Chemistry GRE is not required but is recommended.
- Official transcripts.
- Three letters of recommendation.
- Statement of goals.
International students only:
- TOEFL is required if your Bachelors degree was received outside of the United States.
- Certified degree certificates with your official transcripts.
- Official transcripts must be stamped and sealed by the registrar/controler of examinations, otherwise students must have them evaluated by World Education Services (www.wes.org).
Applications are reviewed continuously. The application due date for the spring is September 15th (August 1st for international students), and February 15th (January 15th for international students) for the fall - we will continue to review applications for exceptional candidates after the due dates. Applications received after these dates will be reviewed if space permits.
Details regarding the graduate program at Temple University and how to apply can be found at the Graduate School's website (www.temple.edu/grad/admissions), along with guidelines for international students (www.temple.edu/grad/admissions/international.htm).
Applicants with a GPA less than 3.25 can apply for a waiver.
TOEFL scores need to be at least 575 paper-based, 230 computer-based, or 88 internet based or higher.
Please indicate in the statement of goals your specific area(s) of interest (ie. analytical chemistry, biochemistry and bioorganic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, materials/nanoscience, physical chemistry, photonics, etc.). It is useful if you can identify faculty whose research is of special interest to you.
All full-time Ph.D. students admitted to the graduate program will be given a Teaching Assistantship. Part-time and MA students may be granted an assistantship based on availability, but this is not guaranteed. Keep in mind it is not necessary to get your Master's degree prior to getting your Ph.D. The average Teaching Assistant stipend for full-time students admitted to the Ph.D. program in the fall of 2008 is $22,500 for 12 months, and includes health insurance and full tuition remission.
University fellowships and Dean scholarships, offering substantially greater stipends are available for exceptionally qualified candidates.
