As part of its effort to encourage undergraduate participation in research, the College of Science and Technology is pleased to announce the CST Spring Undergraduate Research Program 2010.
Students may earn internship or research credits working in undergraduate research positions this academic year. The program is open only to current undergraduate CST students graduating May 2010 or later. Successful applicants will be contacted by faculty for interviews.

Global Human Health (GHH) IT Global Solutions Delivery organization provides capabilities to support Merck's commercial operations world-wide. The selected candidate will be responsible for one or more of the following activities: business analysis, technical analysis, process definition, process management and testing. The selected candidate will likely gain hands-on experience with Oracle's Siebel CRM platform. Industrial placements will be available in our state-of-the-art facilities in suburban Philadelphia, USA, to work as part of an interdisciplinary team that designs and synthesizes novel biologically active agents as part of a drug lead identification and optimization process. Working under the supervision of experienced medicinal chemists, interns will participate in the design process and be responsible for the synthesis, purification and characterization of targeted compounds. Interns will also determine, obtain and interpret the necessary analytical data in support of your synthetic efforts and will interact with other members of the drug discovery teams to drive drug discovery.
Who can apply: Highly motivated students with a solid understanding of mechanistic organic chemistry and an ability to apply it toward successful synthetic research. Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new experimental techniques, as well as hands-on experience with modern spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques (NMR, MS, HPLC) and good communication skills. Ideal candidates will have completed most of their Bachelor degree requirements by June 2010 (estimated initial graduation January 2011). This internship will effectively postpone their graduation for August 2011 or January 2012.
Stipend. Successful applicants will be working full-time (35-40 hrs/week) earning about $42,00 per year. This position is not eligible for GSK employee benefits (vacation, health insurance).

- National Science Foundation (NSF) East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI) receive Summer Institute applications. www.nsfsi.org Deadline: December 8, 2009. Summer Institutes are hosted by foreign counterparts committed to increasing opportunities for young U.S. researchers to work in research facilities and with host mentors abroad. Fellows are supported to participate in eight-week research experiences at host laboratories in Australia, China, Japan (10 weeks), Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan from June to August. The program provides a $5,000 summer stipend, round-trip airfare to the host location, living expenses abroad, and an introduction to the society, culture, language, and research environment of the host location.
