Maxwell Kushner, EdD, CST '48, currently an adjunct professor at Florida Atlantic University, was recently granted a certificate of appreciation for outstanding performance and lasting contribution from the College of Education at Florida Atlantic University by the Department of Curriculum, Culture and Educational Inquiry.
Abraham Clearfield, PhD, CST ’48, ’51 received the American Chemical Society (ACS) Northeast Region Award for Achievements in the Chemical Sciences for his outstanding contribution to chemical research throughout his career. Dr. Clearfield is considered one of the foremost researchers in the field of layered phosphonates in addition to his work in the structure of coordination compounds, layered compounds phosphonic acids and phosphonates, crystallography, and porous materials.
A new award for 2008, the ACS Northeast Region Award recognizes the extraordinary achievements of a chemistry professional as evidenced by his or her contributions to the body of chemical knowledge.
Dr. Clearfield has been published in over 540 publications, has edited three books and holds 15 patents. His current research interests are structure of coordination compounds, layered compounds, phosphonic acids and phosphonates, crystallography and porous materials.
Ken Brennen, PhD, CST’62, ’66 and his wife Mary, recently took over the editing and design responsibilities of The Prairie’s Edge, a newsletter for the Friends of Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. The Friends of Sherburne is a non-profit group formed to support refuge projects and educational programs. The Prairie’s Edge is published quarterly for its members in cooperation with Sherburne Wildlife Refuge.
Gerald A. Kean, CST ’65, director of technical quality at Ventura Foods, a Philadelphia-based producer of branded and private label products, received the 2007 Technical Service Award from The Association for Dressings and Sauces for his dedication and service. Ventura specializes in edible oils dressings, sauces, flavor bases and more.
Fred Turoff, CST ’69, head coach of the men’s gymnastics team at Temple University, co-conducted the annual alumni reunion luncheon for gym team “survivors” in August. There were 23 alumni in attendance at the luncheon which took place at the Diamond Club in Mitten Hall.
Dace Viceps Madore, CST ’71, CST ’74, received the 2005 National Medal of Technology at the White House in July. She was part of a team from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals honored for the discovery, development and manufacture of Prevnar, the first ever vaccine that prevents infection by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. Madore, who lives in Pittsford, N.Y, retired from Wyeth in 2004 and currently works as a consultant.
David M. Bressoud, CST ’75, CST ’77, DeWitt Wallace Professor in the mathematics and computer science department at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., was elected president of the Mathematical Association of America.
Leonora Kalinowski, CST '73, and Robert F. Carr, CST '73, celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on February 21st. They were both Math majors at Temple but met while working at Paley Library.
Steven Gross, CST ’88, was promoted to senior research supervisor for Reagent and Product Development, engaged in all aspects of research and development for rare cell analysis for use in cancer diagnostics and for product and assay development in life science research, and for applications in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries at Immunicon Corp, a biotechnology company in Huntingdon Valley, Pa.
Jeffrey W. Glassheim, D.O., FACAAI, FAAAAI, CST '80, was named as Director, Allergy, Asthma, and Clinical Immunology Services with ThedaCare, Inc., the largest employer in northeastern Wisconsin, (ThedaCare Physicians, Inc. division) on December 1, 2006.
Dennis Coleman, CST ’90, has published his first article, “The History of Flashlights,” in the April/May edition of History Magazine. He lives in Abington, Pa.
Sharon Fessey-Waropay, CST '97 and husband, Drew, welcomed their second child on December 2, 2007; a daughter, Clare Rose. Clare is little sister to Catherine, who just turned 15 months old.
Seth Herzon, BS CST ’02, received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Harvard, and began his post-doctoral studies at the University of Illinois. During his studies, he received a National Science Foundation fellowship and the CUE Teaching Award from the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning at Harvard.
