Connecting to Temple's wireless networks
Temple provides wireless Internet access throughout the University. Access is free to all current students, faculty, and staff. Wireless connections are available through the following networks:
|
|
- Wireless4owls - used by Beasley School of Law and Harrisburg Campus
|
When using Temple's wireless network, please remember that the University Computer and Network Security Policy is still in force and relevant.
If you are a guest on campus and require Internet access, ask your sponsor to contact the Computer Services Help Desk at TUhelp.temple.edu or 215-204-8000.
Wifi4owls provides Internet-only access. Connecting to this network is easy because you do not need to register or set up your computer in advance. To obtain access, you simply enter your AccessNet username and TUsecure password.
The wifi4owls network is designed for general Internet wireless access. It provides access to the same resources that are available to you when connecting from home or from a public Wi-Fi hot spot, such as in a Starbucks.
Wifi4owls network coverage is available throughout the following campuses: Main, HSC, Ambler, TUCC, School of Podiatric Medicine, and Fort Washington.
Wifi4owls is an unsecured network. This means that all security relies upon the web site you are accessing. When sending or receiving sensitive information, verify that a lock icon appears in your browser window. This icon indicates that the web site uses encryption to send/receive your information.
The exact location of the lock icon depends on your browser, as shown in these screenshots.
The wifi4owls network is designed to provide access to all of the Temple resources required for coursework. While the network allows most Internet traffic to pass through, there are some security-related restrictions. Please be advised that certain Instant Messenger (IM) clients or games, for example, may not work on the wifi4owls network.
Connect now with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS, or Wifi-enabled Smart Phone or PDA.
A new secure wireless network called TUsecure wireless is now available to the Temple community. This new resource complements Temple's existing wifi4owls public network. Coverage for both these networks is the same throughout the following campuses: Main, HSC, Ambler, TUCC, School of Podiatric Medicine, and Fort Washington. (Please note that, for now, the Beasley School of Law and the Harrisburg Campus will continue to use the Wireless4owls network described below.)
As you move to various locations throughout the University for classes or meetings, use TUsecure wireless to connect to numerous University resources using a secure, state-of-the-art wireless connection. For example, faculty can mount folders stored on departmental servers for use in the classroom. Students can access files made available by their schools and colleges. In addition, authorized staff can access many administrative resources.
TUsecure wireless is designed to provide a secure connection and, therefore, requires a setup procedure specific to your operating system. If, however, you wish to use your laptop just to surf the Internet and check e-mail, wifi4owls offers a fast and easy connection that does not require extensive setup.
Connect now with Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Mac OS.
Wireless4owls is available at the Beasley School of Law and at the Harrisburg Campus only. This wireless connection provides access to certain Temple-specific resources that are not available on the wifi4owls network.
To access Temple's wireless4owls network, you must first register your wireless network card or handheld device at Temple's Net Register web site then set up your computer. Setup instructions are available on this site after you log in with your AccessNet username and TUsecure password.
If you wish to use your laptop to browse the Internet and check e-mail, wifi4owls offers a fast and easy connection that does not require extensive setup.
TUsecure wireless will be available at the Beasley School of Law and Harrisburg Campus in the near future and, eventually, the wireless4owls network will be phased out.
To register your wireless card and get instructions, log in to Net Register.
