Telephone Repair Procedures

Temple University is only responsible for repairing problems associated with the telephone line and inside wiring. Therefore, before reporting a repair problem, you should try the following:

· Unplug the phone that is not working properly.

· Plug a different phone into the jack or try the phone at another location.

· If you have only one phone borrow one from a friend.

· If the same problem occurs no matter what phone is plugged into the jack, the problem is probably the jack.

· If the problem occurs with only one phone, the problem is probably with your phone.

To report problems with your service, call 4HELP. Students are encouraged to report problems immediately.

If a telephone repairperson is dispatched to your residential facility and determines that the problem is in the telephone line, you will not be charged. If the repairperson determines that the problem is with your phone, you will be billed $45.00 for the visit.

Procedures for Disconnecting Calls

Every telephone line is automatically equipped with the "Conference Calling" feature which affects how calls are disconnected. When you place an outside call and wish to disconnect the call to place another call, you must depress the switchhook for at least 7 seconds.

Harassing/Abusive Calls

It is a crime under both state and federal laws for anyone to make obscene or harassing telephone calls. If you ever receive these types of calls, follow these suggestions provided by Verizon:

· Hang up at the first obscene word.

· Hang up if the caller remains silent. Remember, you control your telephone, not the person calling.

· Wait at least 10 seconds before placing a call, this allows our equipment to disconnect the caller even if the caller does not hang up.

· If the calls continue, you should contact Temple's Security Office on your campus and file an official complaint. You must be willing to prosecute the offending person. Security will notify our office if they feel it is warranted.
