Activating your voice mailbox

After its creation, a voice mailbox must be initialized to be placed onto the system.  The necessary information is detailed below. Please be advised that you must initialize your mailbox immediately to avoid deletion and a reissue fee.  Uninitialized mailboxes will be deleted two weeks after their creation.

Initializing your voice mailbox

Before you initialize your mailbox, please set aside a few minutes to create your password and personalized greeting. Note that passwords may be 6 to 15 digits in length. Please do not begin with a zero or use sequential numbers in your password.

After you create your password and greeting, do the following:

1. Press 1-9595 (or 204-9595 from locations off campus) on your touch pad. You will hear "Welcome to Temple's Voice Processing System. If you are a subscriber…press the pound sign."

2. Press the pound sign (#) on your touch pad.

3. Enter your mailbox number, which is your 5-digit telephone extension.

  • If you are located at Main Campus, your mailbox number is prefaced with 204 or "1."

  • If you are located at Health Sciences Campus, your mailbox number is prefaced with 707 or "2."

  • If you are located at Ambler Campus, your mailbox number is prefaced with 283 or "3."

  • If you are located at Tyler Campus, your mailbox number is prefaced with 782 or "4."

4. The tutorial will start - "Hello, this voice message system can help increase your communications efficiency …" Enter the six digit temporary password provided above.

5. Enter your personal password.

6. Record your last name and then your first name into the headset.

7. Record your greeting.

NOTE: Remember to press option 2 to record the mandatory, personal greeting and not the standard automated greeting. The standard computer greeting is not within University recommendations and, if chosen, will disqualify the activation of your voice mailbox.

8. Listen to the entire tutorial. Whenever you need to exit your mailbox, always press the star (*) key. The star key will take you back one menu at a time until you hear "Goodbye."

Confirming voice mailbox initialization

To confirm your mailbox initialization, perform the steps listed below under "Retrieving voice mail messages."

    3. Enter your 5-digit mailbox number.
    4. After you hear your name, enter your password.

A few things to remember
  • Never forward your telephone to an extension without voicemail. Calls will be lost. The reverse is also true. Forwarding an extension without voicemail into an extension with voicemail will exit calls from the system, again resulting in lost calls.

  • Always press the pound key (#) after leaving a message or your message will be considered "unfinished." It may be kept in queue and delayed from reaching its destination.
