Network Services

Network Services is responsible for the installation and maintenance of Temple University networks at eight University locations and thirty Health System locations. Through approximately 400 routed Internet Protocol (IP) networks, Network Services provides Internet access to the the Temple community. Information about obtaining Internet connectivity and IP addresses is detailed below.

Through the use of firewalls and other security measures, Network Services ensures the network security of all residence hall data connections, University systems, and IP networks. Network Services also operates and maintains several name, proxy, and miscellaneous servers. These include DNS (domain name servers), Windows 2000 servers, and Windows NT servers.

In addition to traditional networking via Ethernet cables, Network Services also maintains wireless networks on Temple's campuses. To obtain an estimate for wireless network installation, first confirm that the area is not already equipped with wireless access points. If the area is not equipped for wireless service, you can then fill out the Customer Service Order Request form (Excel or PDF) outlining your request and submit the form to the address below. A Network Services engineer will conduct a site survey.

Office network connections

A network connection gives you high-speed (100MB) access to the Internet, e-mail, academic systems and, where authorized, administrative systems. In order to set up a connection, a Telecommunications technician will run cabling and install a wall jack in your office. The wall jack will be assigned a number for tracking purposes. The computer that will use the connection will also be assigned a tracking number called an IP address. An IP address is a unique number that identifies your computer on the network. There is a finite number of IP addresses, so if there comes a time when your connection is no longer used or needed, it's important to notify Telecommunications so another computer can be assigned the number.

Procedures for requesting an office network connection:

To have a network connection installed in your office, you will need to have an IP address assigned to your computer. Your computer is also identified on the network by a unique name called a Host Name. The host name always ends in .temple.edu.

In addition to an IP address and a host name, your system is also identified by the MAC (Media Access Control) address on the network adaptor (Ethernet) card installed inside your computer. You must have this card in your computer in order to use the connection. Note that when applying for an office network connection, you will need to know the MAC address of your Ethernet card.

To submit a request for a network connection, fill out an IP Address Request Form. Electronic versions are submitted automatically. Excel and Adobe versions can be faxed to Telecommunications at 1-7811. An appointment will then be scheduled for installation. In addition, an IP address will be assigned and you will be notified with contact information on getting help to set up your computer to connect to the network.

Procedures for requesting or moving an IP address:

  • Fill out an IP Address Request Form. Electronic versions are submitted automatically. Excel and Adobe versions can be faxed to Telecommunications at 1-7811.

  • An IP address will be assigned and you will be notified with contact information on getting help to set up your computer to connect to the network.

When the installation is complete, please visit the Computer Services Web site for more information on technology resources at Temple.
