We all enjoy the convenience of online shopping. While the process is easy, it’s important to be smart and make transactions only through secure sites. If the site is not secure, you may put yourself at risk for fraud or identity theft.
Before submitting debit/credit card numbers or other sensitive information on a shopping site, take pause and look for a small lock icon ( ) in your browser window. Note that the lock icon will appear in slightly different locations, depending on your web browser. The lock indicates you are using a secure, encrypted connection, known as Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS). Another indicator is the presence of https:// in front of the web site address.
